Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BF opinions on starter road bike

I have the opportunity to pick up a brand new 2007 Felt Z90 for $450. Good deal or not? This will be my first ever road bike and like most others, will probably upgrade to a better bike in a year or so if I really get more into riding. Will primarily be my weekend rides bike as my MTB has been converted to full time commuter.

thanks.

OP - virtually any road bike that fits and is in good working condition is worth having for $450.

That's a good price and an economical way to see if that's the direction you want to go in. If you upgrade in a year you'll probably be able to sell it for about what you're paying for it now.

Just bought it Hopefully will have some pics later tonight. My brother in law has already said he'd pay me that in a couple months when he starts shopping for his first bike. Win..Win in my book.

Picked it up a little while ago. Bike is brand new, ridden less than a mile Still has the little "feelers" on the tires. I'm going to take it for a short 10-15 mile ride tomorrow just to experience what its like to ride a road bike. Been doing a 30-35mile ride on my old MTB for the last 2-3 weeks, can't wait to try it on the new bike once I take it to my LBS and get a fitting done.

Can't beat it for $450 (its an 07 Felt Z90 FYI).

Rode it up and down the block a couple of times I couldn't wait LOL and immediately noticed a couple of things:

-Sora shift is looong
-Had too many "noises" when shifting, and already experience a phantom shift or two. Looks like a tune-up is in order at the LBS. Definitely not as smooth shifting as my 2000 Rockhopper PRO MTB w/Deore XT/LX mix.

All in all I knew what I was getting into with the Sora shifters and Sora/Tiagra fr/re derailers. But it would have taken me another couple of months to save for a better bike and I wanted to get riding now. This bike will probably get sold to my younger brother-in-law in a couple of months (budget of $400 for a bike) and at that time I will upgrade.....unless i really enjoy the ride on this bike in which case I may just upgrade all the components all at once. Can't wait to get it on the road tomorrow...wish me luck.
