Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any opinions on Ritchey Steel Break-Away Bikes

It seems that this year I will be doing a lot of work related traveling and, most likely, spending longer periods in one place. Instead of taking my bike, I thought about buying a Ritchey Steel Break-Away. Any opinions on Ritchey Steel Break-Away Bikes?

I have a Ritchey Road Logic that I love - similar geometry and same material. Handles and responds great -- I race it. It's a 62cm, if that's of any use.

The craftsmanship is amazing. Really nice dropouts and brazing. Really nice.

i've heard good things. i think on the website you can watch a demo of the bike being broken down and put back together. it's a little more involved than i initially thought, but not too bad.

Depending on your frame, you could get it retrofitted with S&S couplers for less than a breakaway.

Also do a search for more comments about the Ritchey Breakaway in the Bike Forums> Folding Bikes.

Dahon also makes some lovely road frames with S&S couplers - they're almost identical to the Ritchey branded frames, with lovely welds and a good touring/long-distance geometry.

I got a new Breakaway on 12-24-07. I just started riding it regularly and it really is a great ride. You have no idea you are on a two piece frame. It rides like a nice steel frame should. The Ritchey Pro Carbon fork it comes with is stiff enough that you will not feel the need to upgrade. (I am about 175#, 5'9"). I am using Mavic Ksyrium Elites on it. The bike has pretty sloping geometry so make sure you get the right size. I also have a Bike Friday Q and there is no comparison. Both great rides, but you will not know you are on a travel bike with the Ritchey.
The case it comes with is good, but it actually is oversized by an inch or two (and it's a soft case). I flipped it for a S&S case. The breakdown and assembly are really easy.

Breakdown less than 10 minutes. assembly about 20-30 including fine tuning. Packing it in the S&S case takes about 30 minutes which includes wrapping tubes, protecting the bike, bagging stuff, etc.
