Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle

I am not sure if these can go together but I am looking for a more comfortable sadle that is still performance driven. I do not want to spend more than $100. Any suggestions out there?

I have an Alliante Sport. They cost much less than $100 new but are only OEM on new bikes afaik. They sell on E-bay for very little. I was going to upgrade mine until I saw many comments that indicated the Sport was as comfortable or more so than the expensive models. If it is not comfortable it was a very inexpensive experiment and you can sell it for close to what you paid.

Competitive Cyclist has a demo program. I think most or all the models are over $100. But you would have a week to determine is a more expensive saddle is worth it. If you look around there are other manufacturers with satisfaction guarantees.

I have a Serfas Terrazo Select that I like as well as my Alliante Sport that can be found for less than $100. The few reviews that I have seen are favorable.

Roadbikereview.com has a lot of saddle reviews. A lot of times they will comment on other saddles they liked/disliked so you might get a feel that way if you already have some known saddles you have tried.

In a lot of a cases, it is the cyclist's position on the bike that causes the problem, not the saddle. Or they have not experimented enough to find a comfortable position and just wrote them off. It is difficult to believe that someone can try a half a dozen saddles and not find one that they like.

OP - if you're suffering on the stock Bontrager saddle that comes w/the Trek 1000, join the club. That seat generates a lot of complaints. When it comes to bike saddles, softer is not necessarily more comfortable, though. You DO have to build up some tolerance; you have to have good quality cycling shorts, but with those two factors, the right saddle should sit under your bones, and there shouldn't be much soft-tissue contact with the seat. Softer seats let your sit-bones sink in, and tend to allow MORE soft-tissue contact (ouch!). Some of the most popular saddles FLEX instead of being soft - Fizik Arione, etc. are in this group.

My personal favorite is Selle San Marco Arrowhead Aspide; it's getting a little hard to find, because they have some newer models out now - but that means the price on the Aspide is starting to fall, and you should be able to find it for $100 or less.

Forte' Pro SLX. I'm on my third one in 6 years. These saddles are amazingly comfortable (for me at least), and they are quite lightweight at 207g.

$40, permanently on sale

That's actually a different saddle (not just re-branded).

I've been told they're the same and they look extremely similar, but I could be wrong.

The cover on the PricePoint version is sewn. Maybe that's the only difference, but I dunno.

Also, the nose on the Performance model shows the plastic base where the rails go in, and on the PricePoint version, the nose appears to be completely leather covered.
