Bike Fitting ?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Fitting ?

I am in the market for my first road bike and have stopped a quite a few bike shops. Before I buy a bike I want to make sure the bike fits properly, so I have been asking each store about their fitting process. Most of the stores including my LBS want me to get semi-fit and on what they feel is the correct frame(stand clearance and reach to handlebars) and purchase the bike. After the buying the bike they feel I should spend the extra money to get professionally fit. Basically they are fitting the bike to me.

On the other hand, another bike shop said that I should pay $150 to get measured, put on a fitting bike in their store, have the adjustments made on the fitting bike, and then figure out what bike fits me. Only after the fitting do they recommend buying the bike. They would then credit $100 of the fitting towards the price of the bike.

My question is, which way is better? I feel that getting fit before would be the way to go, but I also want to support my $ at my LBS. The other issue is that the store that does the fitting is very expensive (but has very nice bikes)

you should be fitted before you buy a bike.

Option #2 sounds pretty good to me, if that shop sells the brand you are interested in.

Totally agree.

"Buy first, fit later" sounds like recipe for trouble.

I have a fitting question as well. If the LBS gets you fitted to the frame size you need for free do you need to pay extra for fitting? They don't measure but make sure that your body is in a decent geometry for the bike. I did this with my hybrid but not with a road bike. Is it disaster to do the same with a road bike?

always fit first then buy, and that sounds like a great deal too. so in effect you only pay $50 for the fit. that's great as long as they fit you properly. the other method sounds like they may end up pushing a bike on you they want to get rid of because it's not a popular size or a bike that didn't sell because of the brand.
