Fake Flash-Point FP60s on the market

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fake Flash-Point FP60s on the market

Forigve me if this is old news, but i did a quick search, and couldn't find it here.

I just noticed all this on the Flash-Point website blog section. The 'warnings' are about 18 months old, but still...........

"This image shows three differences: The segment join, the ID line and the aluminum carbon bond line. Hopefully you are getting your eye in by now and can easily pick up these features?. Let's now talk about the last major difference between the copies and a true Flash-Point.

With the copies, it seems woven segments are placed on the rim and then molded. Flash-Points are made from a single laminated woven carbon wrap (one join) and do not have segments, the entire wrap is tucked under the aluminum so there is no carbon ridge next to the Al breaking surface. This carbon ridge can be clearly seen in the image.
Our Flash-Points have resin filling the gap between the tucked carbon and the AL, while the copies have carbon fibers butting against the breaking track. This subtle difference is best seen when you have the breaking surface at 90 degrees.

One final telling feature is the matt surface finish on the copies vs. an even shine on Flash-Points. If you are uncertain if you have the genuine article in your hands - please give customer service a call - they will be glad to help you decide. 1-800-472-3972 or 317-481-1120.

"We have noticed some interesting copies starting to enter the market. Don’t be fooled, teh fake rims have: (1) distinct segments – 6 radial joins in the carbon face, (2) very finely machined braking surface, (3) no wear indicators, (4) flat angled sides within the tire-bed and (5) a back anodized tire-bed. Another tell-tale sign (6) is the carbon butting against the braking surface rather than being tucked in under the aluminum as we make our rims (see above image)"

"A distinct difference between copies and the real FP thing is the tire bed. Flash-Points are silver, our extrusion design has pronounced tire beads to provide a firm grip and we use the entire cavity volume to ensure a firm grip is maintained on the inflated tire.

Now take a look at the tire bed of this copy and lets walk through the differences.
1. The color is anodized black while Flash-Points are silver or un-anodized aluminum.
2. The interior of the breaking surface makes a clear 45 degree angle with the tire bed, reducing the effective volume for tire seating. FPs have almost vertical sides with the larger tire bead to give a firmer grip.
3. The extrusion line is very pronounced almost sharp. In FPs the line is slightly wider and more rounded, less obtrusive."
