Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Seven Aerios

I took delivery of my new Seven Aerios earlier today and although I've only been on it for about an hour, I'm very pleased. I'll report back again after I get some long miles into the bike.

The bike replaces my 10 year old LandShark and as I'm now more focused on endurance events than racing, I had this one built with a more plush position focusing on stability & long distance comfort.

It was a coin flip as to this bike or a Serotta/IF/whatever but I ended up with the Seven based on the strength of the local seller.

Details:
Seven Aerios
Seven XL fork
Seven Stem, Bar & Seatpost
Campy Record 10sp
King Headset
Selle SMP Pro Saddle
Speedplay X2 pedals
Mavic Open Pro, 32 hole w/ Vittoria Pave's

16.8lbs as shown.

A very very nice bike. Judging from your gearing you live on top of a hill. What can you tell us about that saddle with that funky nose?

Yeah, I do... Makes the ride-ending cool down spin non-existent. My main training target this year is the RAMROD, 150 miles with 10K ft of climbing so I went with a compact crankset with a 13-26. It's very easy to spin out on even slight descents but should be valuable for big climbs on long rides. I was resistant to the compact idea but had to face the reality of being a wannabe climber trapped in the body of a sprinter.

Saddle is a Selle SMP. I actually found out about them on this forum looking for non-gonad-crushing saddles. Years ago, I had a mild bout of prostatitis from the bike and after the uhhmm 'depth' of the exam, I've been gunshy about saddles ever since. The SMP was comfy, firmer than I expected but the Pro seems to fit my sit bones well.

That is an incredible bike. There are some pretty remarkable reviews of them out on the web. The thing most striking is how the customer can order the ride, steering sensitivity...BB stiffness etc to his or her liking.
Did you go through the whole customer order process? How was fitting performed? Did you extrapolate from your old bike fit and know what you wanted or did you deviate from your previous bike?

Can you post the frame geometry specs?
Love the position and set up. Are you about 5'11" or so? Looks to be about a 170-180mm head tube. Drop would be perfect for me.
Congrats.

Yes, I went through the full process. My LBS is actually a 'studio', one guy who works with individuals by appointment only selling Seven, BMC, Time & Sycip. He was formally a senior fit tech at Seven so has experience for thousands of fits which was one of the big drivers for choosing a Seven. My bike came a week early as I was low-bling with no flashy paint, etc. Order to pick-up was about 5 weeks.

Process was measurements, watching me on my LandShark, talking about what I liked & disliked about the LandShark and what I wanted different in the new ride. Extensive discussions on the end-use and type of riding. These were then reitereated with a short interview with a fitter from Seven.
Seven then designed the frame specs and sent them to the LBS. He set up a demo as closely as possible and we did another fit session with the new position. Seven recommended a slightly higher and more forward postion. I set up my rain bike pre their recs and rode it while waiting on the new one. Seems to work so far.

I'm 5'9" with a 33ish inseam. The effective top tube is 55.8cm, seat tube c-c is 46cm. Head tube is 14.5cm. Probably looks a little stretched due to the wide angle lens. Head tube 73deg, seat 73.5deg. 10deg slope in the top tube. 41.9cm chainstays and only a 3cm saddle-stem drop so it's pretty plush, not racy at all.

Super nice looking bike. I think in the Ti venue, one would be hard pressed to do better than a Seven. Those guys just know how to make them.

An awesome bike. Spec's aren't too far off the beaten path for your size...pretty square geometry. I need custom geometry more then you do.
You are a man of taste.
Ride Safe.

ARRRGGGHHH! Just called and my Seven Axiom SG won't be ready for another week Seven shipped it two weeks ago and we're still waiting on a couple things. I'll post photos when it comes.

My fitting was similar, though my bike shop does the rough design and Seven finishes it up. This shop fitted my wife with a Waterford 11 years ago and it made a huge difference in her riding. I also know at least a dozen other people with Sevens from the shop.

My specs:
47 cm seat tube (6 degree compact TT)
53 cm eff top tube
72 degree seat tube angle
71.5 top tube angle
(I'm 5'5" with a 30-31" inseam)

The cool thing about Sevens is that when ever I would ask someone how they liked their bike, the answer is always "Love it!" which isn't typical with other bikes in general.

One guy even said it was "the single best purchase he ever made." Can't wait for mine!

That's the frame I have. I built mine up with D/A, a Deda stem and bars, Thompson seatpost and Kysriums. I spent a long time testing riding many bikes before deciding on the Seven. The choice was based on my ability to pick a reasonably light set up but able to spec a stiff rear but keeping the rest not so. I tend to flex the back while steep climbing. Seven absolutely hit the nail on the head with the build. I also has them paint mine with a custom color

I ordered an Alaris last week and I'm still waiting for the phone interview. I spec'd the Deda bar and stem as well. How do you like the Deda gear? I'm thinking Sram Force, why did you decide DA?

Seven's are great bike and if you have a good LBS then you are set.

I am interested in the Selle SMP's also. How did you pick the model? Did you ride others? Chicago Bike has a demo program but their is a 4-8 week wait. I am currently riding an Alliante but have wondered about these. It seems that almost everyone that tries them likes them with few exceptions.

Show us your LandShark if it has a neat paint job. I go to the website often just to look at the art.

I like the Deda combo. It's as light as anything out there, and is less expensive than CF. I went with DA because my bike is three years old and Sram just came out. I didn't have enough feedback from riders to decide

I just got a new Cervelo as well and debated Sram. The sales manager at the LBS store said he used Force for a long time. He felt it was lighter but more finicky than DA.

Another frustrating call with the bike shop, another SEVEN day delay. At least all the stuff is now in the shop so THIS time I should be able to count on the delivery date.

Oh well, it's supposed to start snowing again in a couple hours so I'll only miss a couple good rides.
