Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Pro Carbon Shoe

Replaced a very old pair of Shimano R-210's with the Pro Carbons. A very nice looking well made shoe, fits my foot perfectly. After a couple of rides im seeing some issues. The varus wedge feels different, although it may be a good change. I could get used to it, and possibly help a minor hip problem when I go high mileage.

A bigger problem is interference with the crank arm. I always set my shoes up close to the crank arm, and have always pedaled with my ankle even closer (even loose a little skin now and then). Due to the shape of this shoe (Wide where the closure anchors) it hits the crank arm every pedal stroke. Even worse when I'm out of the saddle.

Im trying one more clead adjustment then these are probably going back. My question is whether anyone else has a similar problem, and what shoes worked best for you?

I've rubbed through the finish of my Ultegra cranks with my Pro Carbons. I like the shoes too much to change. I may just get a new crank and move the cleats in.

I use these shoes and I am trying to visualize how this shoe rubs a crank arm any worse or better than any other cycling shoe? Do not have this issue.

If you compaired it to something like the old Shimano, with velcro strap closure, it wider where the "X-Link" strap screws into the side of the shoe. The plastic holding the strap hits the crank arm.

I don't have the problem any worse than any other shoe I've had. The shoe is as wide as my foot.

I've had the exact same experience - new bike in Jan + new Specialized Pro Road Carbons. Took me a while to work out how I got this strange set of scratches on my shiny new 105 right crank then I checked the position of the X-link screw. After momentarily feeling slightly pissed (new bike etc) I remembered the mantra "tool not jewel" and have been loving these shoes since. I suspect it's a Shimano only problem - ironic given what they put on their bikes.

I know I am getting old and get brain freeze and such but I just went downstairs and pulled the shoes out of my bag. What the heck can scrape the crank while you are pedaling. All the closures are on the outside side of the shoe. Maybe I have been wearing them on the wrong feet.

We are talking about the Pro Carbon shoe not the S-Works?

Exactly what I thought. Why not just move the cleat inward?

You're right....but....check the other side of the X-link and you'll see a nice metal screw flanked by plastic. I think it's the screw that does it.

Yes, you could move the cleat, but then you're affecting how you connect with the pedal which might not be a good thing.
