Get yourself in real good shape, then show up in jeans and an old t-shirt...kinda 1970's Tom Ritchey look...and blow them all away.

Not for nothing, but here at the BF Think Tank you're considered elitist if you can spell the word properly.

oh yea, I get that.
I don't dive with people that could kill me. here are a couple of examples though: my last cyclists BF had two pairs of identical shoes. One for the car, one for the beach so that when we went surfing, one pair would remain sand-free. And he always carried a gallon of water in his car to rinse his toes, and he was always trying to pull my ponytail through the back of my cap....I don't like all that, when the guy is more feminine than I am. another would fill out index cards with the address where he was, his full name and SS # and when I laughed at that, he indignantly asked "do you know how many people across America, are in comas, and nobody knows who they are? I just think it's funny. I'm sure he is right, precisely right. I don't meet too many people in other activities that are planning their *post coma existence* to that degree. But my friends had fun making "If Found" stickers with his picture on it after he went back to Socal, and putting them everywhere. I am only pointing out that these guys can be cheap entertainment if you can assume the right mindset. And then there are the hikers that clip the tags from their t-shirts, he he. And of course, my old Vitus got me some ridicule. Sometimes? Certain people making fun of you is actually a compliment. |

But crewshell, your post presents you as a pure twit.
Maybe you could use your time to actually HELP the OP instead of fishing around for opportunities to get your jollies on with degrading comments. |

Who isn't a judgmental twit here in BF at one time or another? Don't take on the Pcad. He will bury you with his massive post count.

To survive is a major acheivement. One the first stage, the winner was about 5 hours, the 50th, 8 hours. This is not riding in a pack, this is pure survive. If they guy rides in it and finishes, he would have most of you wimpering on the hills. Of course, if he saw a snowflake, we would go crying for his Mommie most likely... |

To the OP. I showed up to the my first group ride, introduced myself, explained i hadn't ridden in a group before and asked about general etiquette/rules. I was smart enough to know i couldn't ride with the hammers, but found a place in the C ride, then later moved up to the B ride. By the end of summer, if i saw a new guy i would engage them in a convo and give them a quick run down as it was given to me. Everyone wins that way, he knows what to expect, and i know what his skill level is and treat him accordingly.
Show up, ride, and if you have questions....ask. If you don't have questions, then you should know what to do and should be able to hang and the problem will resolve itself when you prove you can hang and not kill the group. |

You are right of course. I remind you of the bell curve. Those that do community service to help others and on the opposite spectrum, serial murderers. Pcad though loathsome is just a sad narcissist because his daddy, if he had one, didn't give him any love. Fred references and insulting others is in effect insulting himself which he feels comfortable with because in his mind he is a Fred which of course even falls short of the mark. :p

It is a multi-day race (mountain bike) over the mountains (not little wimpy hills) and NOT asphalt - going through coffee plantations, fording rivers, etc.

I might only ride my bike 20hrs a week, and I might not MTB at the moment, but physically, I'd eat her and old man river for breakfast, rinsed down with my Earl Grey with lemon. |

If you ask me, your gear is far superior to theirs in terms of function. Unless they are actual racers, they should be on bikes like yours and not on carbon fiber racing bikes.
If you really want to start messing with them, ask them how they get to work. When they say they drive, ask them "Why? You have such an nice bike." Additionally, you do realize that many people don't have the luxury of riding to work right? As some who used to ride for work it just irks me when the "I ride to work and you don't" attitude come out. I wish I was as witty as Pcad or botto in this response but I'm not that good. Cheers Rob |
I am hugging you right now. It is okay.

As for the rack and fenders, no and maybe. There could be some slight aerodynamic gain if you removed the fenders, but I've never noticed one. No measurable gain if you removed the rack. The weight of either accessory is also negligible unless the rack is made of wrought iron. In fact, on your next ride with these people, you should bring a trunk bag and fill it with snacks. After the ride, share them with the riders who were nice to you. If you really want to start messing with them, ask them how they get to work. When they say they drive, ask them "Why?
