Synnvisc/Knee Progress Report

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Synnvisc/Knee Progress Report

I reported back in early February about my cranky/arthritic right knee. I had a series of three Synnvisc shots over two weeks ending in early February. My knee responded fairly well, now it's about 6 weeks after the last shot. Happy to report my knee feels 100% better. Normal 90% of the time. When it gets stiff/swollen (typically in response to hard cycling combined with low barometric pressure/rain, etc.) it responds very quickly to one dose of Advil. Previously I was on Advil for days at a time with little relief.

Bottom line: so far the Synnvisc has been a revelation. 2500 miles so far this year, lots of hammering, four races, no problemo. So Synnvisc would appear to work so far for this cyclist. Hoping I won't need more shots for a year, some patients get 2+ years of relief. We'll see.

P.S. I had an ACL reconstruction in 1989, bad cartilage damage, but cycling daily since then, no real persistent arthritic knee issues until this past winter @ age 50, saw my original surgeon, he recommended against further surgery, said it was just arthritis and that he thought I'd respond to the Synnvisc.

Getting old(er) is hell. I am near that point myself. Thanks for the update. I need to remember Synnvisc. My knees are starting to ache and I am going to check for arthritis at my physical in a couple of months.

The shots were pricey, $1500. My insurance covered about $1000, so out of pocket $500. Regardless, I didn't have much choice, my knee was pretty stiff and swollen much of the time. Glucosamine/Chondroitin (which I take daily) used to be enough, then by January forget about it. Supposedly most patients don't feel the full effects of Synnvisc until 10 weeks after the last shot (for me that would be mid to late April), but my knee has been great from a few weeks afterwards. Supposedly Synnvisc offers far more lasting relief than cortisone....

My knees are junk now. I hope in 20 years when I'm your age they have cyborg leg replacement available as an outpatient procedure.

How balanced are your legs since that?

Don't run red lights, wear a helmet, use hand signals, get some cycle lights(front and rear) and, FFS, don't run red lights!

Dude, I am so glad to hear you are doing much better. I mean that.

I always shy away from giving medical advice to anyone (family included) or any advise at all, but I have 2 pieces of advice for anyone and everyone that I still dish out. Never get fat and never get old. Not a darn thing is good out of either one. Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to convince themselves or just messing with your head....................

Having said that, I hope at your age I can do 1/2 as much cycling as you do!

Well, we've certainly had our differences in this forum. But I am glad to hear the treatment is working. To have one's passion taken away would be the worst form of hell.
