Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Williams 50c wheels...good and bad

Well, the wheels came this afternoon. I ran down to my building a while ago, hot to get them ready to ride. The front wheel...perfect. PR3 tire, latex tube, everything hunky dory.
The rear wheel...not so much. When I brought the tire up to pressure, I heard a bit of a pop. I didn't think anything about it...thought maybe the tire was seating itself in the bead. Well, when I put the wheel on the bike and spun it, I learned the source of the aforementioned POP. It seems that the bead of the wheel was thin in that spot, causing the rim to have a 3-4" bulge. It was OBVIOUS and the wheel is unrideable. I could hear crinkling in the spot when I squeezed the brake track.
Seeing as it's Friday night, I called Williams, just to leave a message. About 45 minutes into my frustration, Keith Williams called me back. He seemed to be genuinely bothered by the defective wheel and is going to replace it...sending me a new rear wheel Monday via FedEx, even before he gets the other wheel back.
I'm a bit bummed that I can't ride the wheels (I won't ride just the front) until next week, but very happy that they are going to take care of the issue.

We'll see...ride report will be delayed about a week.

The response of K. Williams is very good to hear. Hope it turns out well. I have high hopes for their product.

I forgot...

Other than the problem, the wheels are finished out very nicely. They are light (right at quoted weight) and the hubs are smooooth. The spoke tension seemed to be very equal as well.

I had a similar problem with a set of system 30s that showed up with a ding in the rim. I called and he sent out a new wheel the same day. Very happy with the customer service, and the wheels quality is great too.

I'm glad to hear you had a similar experience with a bad situation and hope the new one is as good as the other wheel.

i'm probably going to be picking up a set of system 30's next week for my RS2 build. after looking at the rol's, neuvations, souls, ebay, etc. they seem like the best bang for the buck in the <$500 clincher range. glad to hear the customer service is up to par.

So when neuvation does the same thing, you bag on them for having crummy wheels?

I have to agree that williams wheels look sick, even the decals

You are in Hawaii - the fishing poles (deep-sea, it looks like) would make sense.

However, here's a smartass comment:

Way to hijack a thread, buddy. Congratulations on your Reynolds wheels, they look great (and I do hope to read a review from you soon, nice wheels!) - but I do believe the subject of this thread refers to the Williams 50c wheels.

How's that for a smartass comment?

Got the new rear one, it's perfetto. They are installed and the bike is sitting down in the ManHole(tm).
Unfortunately, I home with the kiddos, the wife isn't home yet and it's supposed to start raining any time.
It supposed to rain in the morning as well. Looks like the maiden voyage will be on Sunday. I'll take some pics in a bit. They look good on the bike.

Carbon with the basalt stuff in it. Looks to be painted a bit too. I'm sure that'll go the way of the do-do after one ride.
