nashbar vs performance

which one do you prefer
( i know performance owns nashbar )

redneckwes 03-28-08 08:31 PM

Performance owns Nashbar, same company.

Az B 03-28-08 08:32 PM

They're the same company. Performance bought Nashbar out several years ago.

They're both closeout stores, and most of the time don't really have anything I want other than tires, tubes, socks... stuff like that.

I do find Nashbar's selection has been better, but it will be going downhill as Performance is planning on shutting then down in the next 2 years.

Since Performance took over Nashbar; product line has not varied that much. But, from my experience; the mail service at Nashbar has gotten as lousy as Performances.

patentcad 03-28-08 08:34 PM

They should just rename the two Fred Warehouse.

I think it should just be "The Fred Depot"

Cdy291 03-28-08 09:47 PM

There's a Performance Bike shop within driving distance of my house and I get totally assume deals there all the time. They also have a lot of bull sh#t to but as long as you can see through the BS you can do good.

Or the "I spend my money racing my bikes so I'm glad someone has cheap tubes, seats, tools, and replacement parts to keep my bike race ready week in and week out" Depot.

johnny99 03-28-08 10:15 PM

Both have gotten worse since the takeover, especially at their stores.

Nachoman 03-28-08 10:15 PM

I also have a Performance Store close to my house. It's good for basic supplies. Like I just bought my son a base layer there for about $15.00.

LanceFanBoy 03-28-08 10:31 PM

nashbar's selection has been better lately, but performance usually has slightly nicer products

s4one 03-28-08 11:40 PM

Yea they usually don't carry the stuff I am interested in other than the essential stuff like tires.. I usually like to use competitivecyclist and PBK.

yogi13 03-28-08 11:41 PM

I'm "lucky" enough to have a performance about 15 minutes from my house. Not a bad place to pick up tubes, tools, etc., and because it is close I can order anything online and get it shipped to the store free.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot that I would want from there in the way of clothes or components. Nashbar has been slightly better in the past, but their current collection pretty much sucks.

Closest thing we have here is MEC... And it makes me glad that there's PBK.
There's a lot of fred gear at MEC, but race gear... not so much.
You should be happy you even get "Depots" or "Warehouses" because those stores charge a lot for shipping and they are prone to getting caught at customs.

Neither.

GlassWolf 03-29-08 12:53 AM

wow the snobby elitism is running strong here. Glad to know it's not dead.. for a while there I'd almost started to think this was a ncie place to hang out!

My 21 year-old road bike was made by/for Nashbar, and it's still just as good today as it was back then, steel frame, 600EX group and all. I don't have an $8000 Madone, and I don't need one to be a good rider. surprise.

Says the guy with the $6000 mountain bike listed in his signature.

What was your point again?

I'd almost +1, except that I'm not going to call anybody snobs or elitists. My reaction to all the negative comments and criticism was simply that I disagree. I have nearly all Performance clothes. They're cheaper, they work great for me. I don't pay for name brands unless there is no 'generic' equivalent or the name brand is actually better.

I've ordered probably thousands of dollars of 'stuff' from Performance over dozens of occasions and have never once had a problem with delivery time or accuracy. Oh, well... one time I got red Fusion Comp tires instead of silver, and they worked on my silver, red and black bike anyway.

I've ordered a couple times from Nashbar when Performance didn't have what I wanted. Same result.

I guess it's a YMMV thing.

Edit: not so much luck with components though... Campy stuff ain't their bag.

I bought it used, and cheap.

I still buy cheap parts from nashbar, like fenders, helmets, etc.. becasue their prices are generally cheaper than other suppliers I see on-line, I have one small LBS with very limited selection, and many things I prefer not to fight with eBay to purchase. I do agree that both places have gone downhill since the merge, and both seemed better ten or fifteen years ago in my personal view, but I think it's good to have a large retailer for cycling around. Maybe even several, just to keep prices on the common stuff down through competition and large quantity purchases if nothing else. I just get tired of people bashing anything big pr popular without any just cause other than being the "cool" thing to do.

It's so very teen-angst-ridden highschooler.

timmyquest 03-29-08 01:19 AM

This thread is funny.

GlassWolf 03-29-08 01:49 AM

sorry. it's 3am here, and I'm up because I can't sleep thanks to some pain from complications with the transplant. Puts me in a sour mood, so I tend to say things without my usual courtesy. My aoplogies if I was offensive in my previous posts.

EGreen 03-29-08 04:04 AM

I like my Performance brand Neoprene boots (ies) I take what I need, leave the rest.

chinotex 03-29-08 04:19 AM

I like to use performance because of the 10% back members program... buy enough tubes and tires, etc, and before you know if you've got $50 in points that you can use on anything in the store... this weekend they're having a "double points" promotion, where you get 20% back... I'm stocking up on things I would buy eventually anyway.

I like that and it kind of fits since Nashbar was originally called "Bike Warehouse." Of course, only us old guys probably know that. :)

scotch 03-29-08 07:16 AM

the thing i don't like about the Performance site (and maybe Nashbar is the same way) is that you don't know if something is back ordered until you've finished purchasing it. this especially sucks when you've paid extra for faster shipping.
