9 or 10 speed Campy for Guerciotti build?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

9 or 10 speed Campy for Guerciotti build?

Hi everyone...

I'm trying to decide on whether to get a new 10 speed or (gently) used 9 speed Campy drive train for a '89 Guerciotti frame (my first build & my first newer bike) and would like opinions either way. I'm leaning towards 10 speed but Ive heard that its is more finicky than 9.

Ive posted on the frame in C&V-

Any opinions/advice are greatly appreciated
Thanks,
RS

I've got a ten-speed Veloce in the rear and a triple up front. When properly adjusted, it's not finicky at all. Crisp and accurate shifting.

Campy 10 isn't finicky at all. It just works. If you have a 9-spd group, by all means use it, though. I have run the 10-spd through all sorts of conditions (snow, slush, rain, mud) on my cyclocross bike and it has never failed to shift great.

Just make sure to get Chorus or Record shifters if you are getting new stuff. The single shift new-model shifters leave something to be desired, IMHO. Don't worry about getting high-end for the rest of the stuff unless you are trying to save weight. They all work the same.

Cheers~

It just occured to me that I also have a 9 speed Mirage set up (I wonder if forgetting about bikes you own is a sign you have too many. Nah.) Again, not finicky, but I like the ten speed a little better because of the smaller transitions between gears.

+1

9 speed looks a little classier though.
