Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What are the differences between these two shimano chains?

Can I replace a 9 speed Shimano CN-HG73 with a Shimano CN-HG53 when the former finally wears out? There is not much information on Shimano's website and I have no idea what the numbers mean and what compatability issues there are. I am using a compact Tiagra (50/34t) with a 9 speed SRAM PG-950 (11-28t).
Cheers,
Roger

Minor quality differences between the 53, 73 and 93. Personally I only buy replacement chains with a powerlink. SRAM makes excellent chains and the powerlink is a no brainer compared to the stupid break-off pin. All you need to be sure of is that your replacement chain is Shimano 9 speed compatible. There are many options. Another option is to buy the Shimano chain and a SRAM powerlink instead of using the break-off pin. Works fine.

I think missing links are such that you seperate them by pinching the plates and push them together...
Is the powerlink the same?

yes, same. slightly different design, but basically the same thing where you pinch them together.
Honestly I would just use a SRAM 951 or 971 chain since it comes with the link.
