sidi genius 5

my lbs owner told me he'd sell them to be for 50% off. should i take him up on that offer, or get a carbon soled shoe? or will i really not even know the difference?

hammond9705 03-29-08 11:02 AM

Run back and buy them before he changes his mind

AlexTaylor 03-29-08 11:03 AM

As fast as you can.

grafsk8er 03-29-08 11:09 AM

haha, alright. will do...just as soon as i get my new bike (juneish). ugh, i hate waiting for money

Bontrager 03-29-08 11:09 AM

Buy his entire stock. You'll make millions selling them here on BF.

pick me up a set of 43's

Surferbruce 03-29-08 12:24 PM

carbon is fantastic, but i love the genius 5's. a little flex goes a long way.

BarracksSi 03-29-08 12:33 PM

I got back from my first extended ride in my Genius 5's, and yeah, +whatever to what everybody said above.

This is only the second time I've had them out, though. On my first ride, my feet were killing me, but I'm not sure if it was the minimal insole, the sub-freezing temps, or just having the straps cinched down too tightly. I put in some heat-moldable insoles last night, set the straps to something comfortable, and had a good 2-1/2 hour ride today.

I was about to put them up for sale, but I think I'll keep 'em (although maybe I'd do better with the next size up... hmm..).

What kind of insoles? What did you have to do to them?

They're Sole Custom Footbeds -- http://www2.yoursole.com/

I had to trim a LOT off of the size 12 insole so that they would fit into the narrower Sidi shoes, despite the shoes also being 12's (actually, 11.5 "mega"... close, though). I then followed the directions -- put them one at a time in an oven for a couple minutes (toaster oven in my case), threw each one into a shoe, cinched down the straps extra-tight for more pressure, and stood on them for another few minutes.

It took a few tries and re-trims before I was satisfied, but they seem to work really well. I think I'm going to get another set for my uniform shoes at work.

(finally taking a look at their site..)

I've got the Regular Softec now; I'd really like to try their Slim Sport model, though. If I can't find them locally, I'll try mail order.

s4one 03-29-08 02:29 PM

I'll take a 43..

BarracksSi 03-29-08 02:31 PM

I'll take a 47 Mega, decide on whether I prefer the 46s I have now or the 47s, and sell the pair I don't want. ;) Either way, the stock footbeds will be hardly used. :D

heads up! 03-29-08 03:48 PM

Just an FYI, I've got my Sidi Genius 5's up on eBay right now. Nearly new and they'll be going for less than 50% retail. They just didn't fit my foot.

biketiresdirect has the hard to find all- white ones for like 175.00 right now.

zac 03-29-08 05:49 PM

What everyone above said. I have two pairs. They are mentioned in my will.

R900 03-29-08 06:05 PM

Get them!

Great prices at that site... Thanks.

As far as insoles are concerned, I thought I'd be forced to invest in some custom ones (I ride 45's,) but I just snipped a good little bit off the arch part of the stock one and now they're just fine. But yeah, they were definitely hurting the first few times I rode. I'm not exactly sure what it was, but I think I have flat feet.

;) I'm the opposite -- I need good arches in my shoes, or else my knees are wrecked (mainly when jogging).

charliekeri 03-29-08 06:57 PM

best shoes I've ever owned. Never had a numb foot since. I feel compelled to buy a backup every time a good sale pops up.

gpelpel 03-29-08 08:09 PM

If they fit, they are fantastic. I have the mega version for wide feet.

Please be mindful of this tendency!!! I wasn't and I ended up with 6 pairs of Sidi shoes. I think I may need to be buried with a pair (which will still be fairly new, even then). ;)

Yes, my name is Mr. Fly and I am a shoe wh*r*. :D
