Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trek Project One Value

I was looking at Craigslist and saw this bike that I remember eyeing back last summer. At FreeFlite Bicycles they had a Trek Project One simular to this one and loved it. I was an 07 5.2. It disepeared in no time but now I have found the exact same bike from the guy who bought it, he said thats where and when he got it. He says its got about 2- 300 miles on it and he put a Fizik Alliante on it. He's asking $2250 for it and that sounds a bit steep to me. Its not likely I will end up with it but its possible and so thats why I'm here asking this question.

It doesn't matter how much it's worth to us, it matters how much it's worth to him.

I was asking just to see if it was worth it to ask him to come down some. I know that he didn't pay full price for it new. It is a special project one but the 07 Madone 5.2s are going for like $1899 now new.

Given the popularity of Treks, the Project One is a lousy scheme to get people who want Treks but doesn't want the exact Trek as the next guy in group rides.

CL is full of lowballers, hopefully he's prepared.

"given that I am 6'1", This is just too small for me" for a 54 cm frame. What was this guy thinking? Either that or he's selling it for a friend.

Does Trek never use carbon steerer fork ever? I have not seen a Trek frameset shipped with full carbon fork.

I found this on CL before I saw it on Ebay. I actually messaged back and forth
with this guy for a few days, seems like a decent guy.

Select 08 Madone's have all carbon forks. I *think* 5.5 and above.

I won't go quite as far as a saying rip-off, but IMO the paint doesn't add much value. If you question that you are paying to much, you probably are.

Couple things on the new 2008 Madones: only the 6.x series (OCLV Red) forks are all carbon.

Brandnew Madone for 1800 or a P1 for 2200? I am going for new any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Trek's warranty is one of the best in the business, coupled with a pretty wide base of LBS support to back it up, but that applies to original owner only.

P1 is for riders to try and get a personal touch on paint (not worth it for me, but I can understand it) and for riders to custom build their bikes: you want Campy Record, no problem. However, that being said, I actually feel that a P1 bike's paint detracts, rather than adds, value from the bike.

Just a rant about CL and Ebay: deals can be found, but this ain't one of them. People try to sell used for near or more than new!
