Takes about 45 seconds with the proper tools. Question is, why are you replacing it?

it's complicated. i want the gears off of one deore xt crankset (48/36/26) but has 175 arms, which are probably too long because I'm 5'2", and I want the arms off of the standard 44/32/22 at 165- 170.

Not a Deore expert by any means, but isn't the drive side arm pretty much permanently attached to the spider? I think you want to swap out the chainrings, not the arms, although you still have to remove the none-drive arm to do that.
Check with your LBS, ask them what the cost to pull the arm off vs. cost of a crank puller, but really you might want one later anyway and they aren't terribly expensive. Don't try to do it without the right tools though, you'll bugger something up but good.

Crank puller = cheap. Keep it for when you decide to rebuild or replace your BB. Tools are always a good investment, along with the knowledge to use them. Try this place for knowledge:

how about every girl?
will the torque wrench prevent me from over tightening? I imagine it would
also, can someone tell me how it is done? I'm still a bit mystified. Beyond knowing that it is easy and requires a tool or two, I'm stuck.
