Considering these bikes for First Road Bike price<1500

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Considering these bikes for First Road Bike price<1500

Giant TCR A1 08- 1400, felt good, full 105, aluminum frame with some carbon parts.
Trek 2.1 Compact 08- 1200. Alum Frame.
Fuji Team 07- Found it for 1000$ at Performance bikes. 105/Ultegra. Full Carbon. https://www.fujibikes.com/2007/bikes.asp?id=268&subcat=

I'm leaning towards the Fuji because for the price it seems like a terrific deal. Is it a great pick-up? Or should i go with a better-known brand.

Looks like a pretty good deal to me. Fuji is a pretty good brand and you'll see many other people here at BF who ride em. FWIW, I have a Giant TCR (aluminum) from a couple years ago and it rides well. That being said, cheaper and better components makes this a no brainer.

I say no to the TCR A1, doesn't do it for me. Trek 2.1, meh. Fuji seems like a good bang for the buck.

Why not look at the Cannondale CAAD9. It can be had for 1300 with full 105 and ultegra RD. It's arguably the best bike in the sub 1500 dollar price range.

Fuji all the way!! So much bang for your buck and it is fairly unique. Every time I go in to my shop, I am drawn to these and they carry both bikes.

Woah! Their team got a pound heavier for '08. The '07 looks pretty good! If these are your only options, I'd go with the Fuji. The cannondale is probably the better frame, even though the CAAD9 with similar parts weighs about .3 lbs more than the fuji.

I've had bowel movements bigger than that..

wait.. sorry..

In this price range, nothing truly sucks -- they're all good bikes. Get what fits and is a nice color.

(partial to Cannondale myself, but I'll leave that out of it )

Results?

So, what did you end up buying? I'm looking at the same bikes myself. The Trek 2.1 is now $1099.00. Pretty good deal for the bike and I like the looks of it.

The Giant A1 is a wonderful ride. It doesn't have "some carbon bits". The head tube, top tube, top half of the seat tube, and seat stays are all carbon. The bottom half of the bike (downtube, lower half of seat tube, and chain stays) is all aluminum. It's a great feeling ride and I prefer it over the all carbon TCR's. I'd love to have one.

Bikes: Giant TCR C2, Raleigh Cadent Carbon

The price on the Fuji is very attractive. Depending on what other accessories you want to buy (pump, toolkit etc.), you are probably looking at spending another $100+. Purchasing at Performance gives you back 10%. While, cost is a compelling consideration, go for what makes you want to get on the bike, especially if this is your first bike.

A month back, I tried test-rode several bikes Al, full carbon and my budget was about $1000. I chose an '06 Giant TCR C2 on a closeout at $1399 (all Ultegra) over the Fuji and several others. Why? I just felt that the bike responded better on a fast descent and yet the carbon smoothed out the bumps -- It was still mostly a subjective gut-feel, IMHO, given that I want to bike for fitness and enhancing endurance.

Please post your decision and reason. Just curious.
