Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You've got $5k to blow

If you had roughly 5k to blow what bike would you build up...i've been dreamin' about the day when I'll have money to upgrade and have had potential builds running around my head all day, right now a Pinarello FP5 or F4:13 or possibly a Look 585 or maybe a Cervelo Solist Carbon.

What would you do?

I'd buy my bike, throw some Zipp 404's on it, and even if I threw some carbon handlebars and the same pedals I have now on it, I'd still have about $500 to spare.

This **** again?

It's still a boring Moots Compact build with Ultegra and silver parts. Light, durable, looks good, fast enough for my slow self, won't look dated in 5 years.

I would buy a Bianchi Pista and about 4300 dollars in messenger bags.

And lots of spoke cards.

If $5000 dropped in my lap right now ... I'd be torn between paying for next year's tuition, and packing up and heading for some other part of the world for another cycling tour.

I've already got the bicycle I want.

You could make a rear disc of spoke cards and be both funky and fresh.

Is the F4:13 alot better than the FP5 i mean the F4:13 frame isn't a whole lot cheaper than an FP5 fully built with dura-ace...they say the only difference is the top layer of carbon.

FTW = for the win.

$5000, custom anything (steel, carbon, titanium) but no Richard Sach or Vanilla, I'm not waiting that long.

That Look TT frame. I briefly rode with a guy today riding one, and man, seeing is believing.

The funny thing I can dream about Pinarellos, Cervelos, Looks and high end Cannondales but in the end at this point I'm basing all my preference on looks and accolades because I've only ridden one other bike than mine and thats my buddies look (i don't know the model) and i honestly just noticed it was a bit more responsive and lighter. In the end the only thing I know is what I DON'T like about my low end Trek 1500.

I'm with Machka - I'd rather spend money going places with my bike than spend a ton of money on an ultra-high-end bike.

I still like my 1500, although it has been relegated to indoor trainer status.

For $5K you can get a sweet custom steel or Ti designed by Tom Kellogg (Spectrum Cycles).

I have a Merlin - trust me, you'll like it better than the 1500, especially on cracked pavement.
