Whats the benefits of high end headsets?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whats the benefits of high end headsets?

My bike came stock with a FSA headset but I am curious what a Chris King headset will provide.

If yours is an integrated headset, Chris King will provide nothing.

If it's a "traditional" headset, Chris King will provide more color options (among others)

I recently stripped my mountain bike down to the frame and rebuilt it after 10 years of use. The grease, just below the headset cap, on the Chris King heatset was still fresh and pink. I have done many bike rebuilds and have never seen that.

There is no benefit other than weight differences and durability. I use $25 headsets, and they last about 8 years with my weight/riding style. I'm not sure how much more they weigh than a $200 headset, but it's not much.

A lighter wallet and a strange feeling while walking.

8 years not long for a headset...and with the possibility of damaging the frame...a canecreek or King is worth the money to last a lifetime.

The ONLY ADVANTAGES - BLING and BRAGGING RIGHTS. Then again to some, just having a Chris King to brag about is more than enough!

Nothing. There are more preferable components on a stock bike to replace. Wheels almost always first, especially on low end bikes. However, there is no need to upgrade/replace anything until it wears out or you can sell it for a reasonable price to fund replacements. Exception: saddle. Most OEM saddles suck.

If you tell us what bike you have, we might be able to provide an upgrade path.

I think you should be banned as a threat to Weight Weeniedom. Seriously. It's like the homeless guy in sandals on the beach cruiser who goes flying past suddenly got an education and a broadband connection.

MPH2, when the headset goes bad, you've got about 2 years of annoying rattles before the chance of any frame damage. I can invest my $200 in bonds and earn enough to buy a $25 headset every 8 years.

It's just a preference and involves tradeoff's lwith cost ike many other cycling components - why get Dura Ace or Record or Red, when there's Ultegra, etc. With King, you are getting top end. The same thing applies to bars, seatposts, wheels, and tires.

Yes but you will not need a hip replacement when you are old if your wallet is thin.

Yes, but you'll still know you took one in the exit only lane. No amount of late night scrubbing with a brillo pad will ever get that off of you....

In the words of Curtis Jackson: "You're sh*t's bling bling. My sh*t's bling Bloaw!"

That's what a Chris King headset gives you.

The only reason I can think of getting a CK for any real application, is if I was to start doing Cyclo-Cross. They are known to be strong, and do well at handling that type of abuse. Otherwise, they are just bling.

That said, I'm all for bling.

You may be right on bars and seatposts.

When it comes down to it, high-end headsets are only high-end because people believe they are and that is mostly because of their price.

Then I expect people to not be so defensive when others bashes their purchase. I jokingly mocked a guy who had Chris King hubset and headset on his commuter, he was silent but gave me a "I f***ing hate you" face. If you are happy with your purchase, you shouldn't have to care what others think.

A lot of insecure people buy bling. Buy logical extension, they will be hurt of someone mocks them for it.
