avg calories burned in an hour

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This 'chart' gives the calories burned by a 140 and 195 lb rider. Although 16-19 mph on their scale is regarded as racing/fast tempo. http://www.nutristrategy.com/fitness/cycling.htm

Glad you put quotes around 'chart'. What a joke!

I cruise at 20mph quite often and am pretty sure I'm not burning 1000+ calories per hour. Maybe if I was hill climbing at 20mph, but this chart just deals with flat riding.

MTB riding, by comparison, burns 540 calories per hour? Maybe perfectly flat fire roads at 5mph. Any real mountain biking would easily burn more calories than a flat 20mph road ride.

Actually, riding a cheap, heavy road bike will make you burn more calories. The work is harder.

As far as calorie computers go - that's for newbies wanting to loose weight. I know I burn a lot of calories on my rides, but to know exactly how much is not that important to me. All I know is I can eat well and, ride hard and regularily, and don't have to worry about my weight.
