The Problem w/ the Road Cycling Forum

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Problem w/ the Road Cycling Forum

I spend way too much money on bike schwagg just by being on here.

So far, I was minding my business one day when this notice of another PF group buy shows up.
Frame+Paint: $>$600;
Groupset: <$1,300;
Wheels just to be all aero (not for the RS2): Gavia Pro-Lite >$500;
I think I'm about to buy a Garmin Edge 305 *sigh*
Poseur Charlatan jersey: $[whatever it was]
Selle-Anatomica saddle: $[whatevuh]
etc etc etc: $[ ... ]

Last year
Badger Cycles custom frame: $1,250?
LigeroWheels wheelset: ~$400

And I do ride my bikes, so I guess it balances itself, no?

Money "saved" by being in good health/shape: $[I don't want to know]. It's too much like my wife "saving" money by spending gobs on "on sale" items.

I know every now and then this type of thread shows up .. and there are 2 or 3 in the archives, I know. What have you spent by being on here? I mean something you bought but really do not need ..

I didn't need an HRM, but I bought one after reading a bit about them here. I also didn't need an Assos jersey, but I asked someone to buy me one as a gift after seeing all the glowing reviews of Assos kit here.

I have to admit, I'm pleased with both items.

We're just a bunch of co dependent swag addicts and enablers.

Spend much time around here and you start thinking that buying all this stuff is normal.

Because of the "Post Your Titaniums" thread... I bought a 2007 Litespeed Vortex, built it up with 2008 Campy Record & 50mm deep carbon wheels. I was perfectly happy with my 2003 Allez before seeing all the bling Ti bikes in that thread.... stupid forum.

Hmm. I'm just out $680 for the PowerTap, and that helped me train to win a race. I won't go through my bike setup, because you all know it... (hasn't really changed since 2001)

This place makes you do all sorts of insane things. I used to just ride my bike, and I was fine. Now, 3 of my bikes are worth more than my truck, and I swap out tires, cassettes, and wheels for different types of riding. I also travel considerable distances to ride -- for several years, most of my driving was to cycling events. To add insult to injury, I started shaving no thanks to the constant threads on the subject. It's very possible that the Road forum has made me gay and I don't even know it. My wife will not be pleased.....

I found that buying my first house and going from 900 up to 2350 square feet is a quick way to break the cycle of schwagaholism.

Pschew! Yeah it seems that at first. I know it did for me. The allure of the .. game (if you will), will keep you coming back.

Now you are selling Zipp wheels to furnish the house. You aren't going to ride the furniture, so soon, you will be looking for buried treasure in that nice new basement/garage to sell on eBay.

The initial mortgage was a shock to the system. 7 years later, now look at what I've become; I don't see the mortgage, so what's left is MINE!! MINE!! To buy bike **** with. So sad indeed

I'm thinking class action lawsuit. There clearly are no warnings on the forum about it's addictive nature and the financial risk.

I think we likely can also find some collusion between the forum owners and the advertisers. We could also consider adding the BD and Zipp shills as defendants.

I'm thinking this has potential.
