Another bicycle appraisal question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another bicycle appraisal question

To all,

I've been asked to "make an offer" on a used 2007 Giant OCR-3. It has supposedly been ridden less than 100 miles.

It is an online ad originally posted for $500 OBO. Now I'm asked to make an offer.

I believe this bike sold for around $700 new. Is $350 a low-ball offer? Generally speaking, how much does a bike devalue?

I'm obviously new to this.

Thanks for any insights!

It devalues a lot when he steals it from someone's garage

Is a low-ball offer what you're after?

I'd offer him $350 or 300. If he doesn't want lowballers, then he needs to do like every other seller in the world and list an offering price.

Depends on condition and components. Do you have a link to the ad?

I am after a low-ball because it's all I can afford! However I don't want to insult anybody.

By the way, I wish I had some birds to trade for this bike, per the ad. Here is a link:

he wants birds as a payment? Did I read that right?
If you offer $225 and he takes it, it's stolen. If he thinks you're ridiculous, offer $325 and go from there. Don't pay more than $400, though.

No way I'm buying a stolen bike, even if it is a good deal. A pizza delivery guy stole my Trek in college, and I had no way to get around after that. It took me about a year to get the money up to replace it. Not such a sad story, but I still don't want that bad karma.

If you're that worried, go to a LBS. They didn't steal the bikes they are selling for sure. Might pay a little more.

If he's the owner, he should still have the paperwork on the bike (since it is so new for warrentee issues). Ask to see it.

$650 (+ shipping and tax?). (Zero shipping over $99.)
