The premise is bogus. I highly doubt his cycling caused his hip arthritis. Maybe that's his line, but I suspect it just isn't true. He probably got the hip arthritis in SPITE OF his cycling, not because of it. And that's my medical opinion, nurse.... it is impossible to "prove" it one way or the other.

I don't understand the hostility, I was just asking a question out of concern for myself (I used to jog and stopped when I learned jogging can cause knee problems and shin splints)
Some of you guys sound like healthcare practitioners. The guy had osteoarthritis... would that+ biking be a bad combination? His femoral head was worn down to "almost nothing" when they did the arthoplasty so something had to cause that damage.
Also he had AVN on his right side like someone mentioned... but no history of drug abuse. He says the doctor told him specifically that the biking is what caused the damage, and that he should have done warm ups before riding at all.

Someone should have told this guy that the right foot goes into the RIGHT pedal, not the left one.. I think he had his legs crossed while he was riding.
Seriously, it could easily have been other reasons. Was he a smoker? My father smoked for 40 years and the degeneration of his red blood cells, etc. etc. ended him up with two fake hips.

Let's think here...
"Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints."
Degenerative disease causing the loss of joint cartilage coupled with performing a repetitive act on a machine that is not adjusted properly to alleviate excessive pressure on a specific joint... Could that cause a problem? I don't know. I'm not a doctor.

Yeah, where is Pete? Probably off doing Doctor stuff. I am sure however that he would add that Osteoarthritis coupled with an RSI using poorly adjusted equipment is kind of a "Duh" diagnosis.

I'm a nursing student and today I talked to a man who was in a lot of pain after requiring a total hip replacement on his right side. I asked him what was the cause and he told me it was biking. He flew in from a small town in Nevada (no surgeons there) and biked about 20 miles a day.
20 miles per day isn't much. Many people on BF have been riding much more than that for a long time.

You can't chock it all up to cycling or to position. How about family history? How about his occupation? Genetic predisposition due to hip anatomy? Has he been osteopenic or osteoporotic for years?? He is probably suceptible to hip disease due to some or all of these factors and cycling was the catalyst. You cannot look at a multifactorial problem like this and say that we all should stop riding or change our position b/c of one guy who had a hip problem who happened to be a cyclist.
Such a patient probably would have had worse hip disease if he were sedentary or if he were a marathon runner. Risk factors and suceptibility matter more than a single activity (short of a traumatic injury, of course).
That said...anyone here riding with a titanium hip or two??
