Pcad's Guide to Cycling Truth #28

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pcad's Guide to Cycling Truth #28

So I'm out finishing up my Road Nazi 45 mile tempo ride at 8AM this morning and I come up on a heavyset dude on an MTB on a country road in the middle of nowhere. Helmet, camelback, MTB on the road, sneakers, classic pre-Fred (or sub-Fred, but in this case, pre-Fred might be more appropriate). Turns out his name is Fritz, he got back on his bike last year after losing 100 pounds. Rides 12-15 miles daily to keep the weight off. I can relate.

He mentioned that he might want to ride with the local touring club, I encouraged him to get a real road bike, shoes, etc. He seemed very interested in getting more into cycling. He rides daily right now. The only difference between him and me is I have no other life outside of cycling, I'm a much bigger poser, and I have fancier bike crap. But essentially we ride for the same reasons. We had a very nice chat on a perfect warm Spring morning in gorgeous Orange County, NY, I congratulated him on the weight loss, told him I hoped we'd see him some Saturday AM with the Orange County Touring Club (although I only ride with them a few times a year now) and boogied on home.

It was a lovely morning. Time to hit the shower.

No No No

You're supposed to fly right by and not even notice him. Much less have a conversation.

Awesome, P-Cad taking the Roadie gospel into the Fred wilderness??

Though deeply Fred myself, I always slow down and talk to those even further Fred than me. Sometimes it's nice to see that there are actually people out there who are both slower, and more Fred than I am.

Much like the humility preached by Jesus, some of the deepest aspects of Pcad Cycling Zen are embodied in the Fredliest of Freds.

P.S. Bear in mind that NY City is where the Soup 'Nazi' and his national franchise got his start.

Yeah, that's Pcad all over.

I can usually read a Pcad thread without feeling as though a group hug is coming on. Not so much this time.

Troubling.

HTFU! Harden the Freds Up! Has a nice ring to it. Could be Pcad's new mission in life. Out searching for Freds that need a kick in the shorts.

That's more like it though I prefer to keep pace with them for a few seconds, look at them, sigh then drop them like a bad habit.

Only in the sick, twisted world of bicycle racing.

Pcad -- the fred is growing strong within you. It may be time, oh wise one, for you to arm yourself with the weapon of the fred.

You just know that they got to a hill and Pre-Fred dropped his bike in the old 44-11 and walked away from P-Cad like he was chained to an anvil.

Good story, P-Cad.

Pcad, the problem with spreading the roadie gospel is that some of the fredliness from him can slowly spread to you. Be carefull. One day you may decide not to get dressed in cycling clothes and take your best bike to the store.
