what is it worth, steel 853 bike w/ 105 group

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have been looking for a nice Dean Steel 853 bike and found one via craigslist.. It is a nice frame DEAN CULEBRA w/ 105 components, which I may upgrade later. The seller wants 1000.00, I was thinking more in the 700-800 range..

what are your opinions. The wheels are ok, not great.. weinmann zac 19's.

I just bought a Ritchey Road Logic (frame only) from the early 90's off of Craigs and gave the guy 400, its got the cheesie Tom Ritchey "mountian bike" sicker which may mean he actually built it. I have no idea on what a Dean would go for.........................offer him 500 and go from there. If your like me you will strip all the 105 stuff etc and build it up the way you want.

steppy

I was planning on putting on a ritchey triple and keep some of the 105 parts and most likely replace the brakes.

Sounds like he just dumped a little money into it to sell it. You can try the lowball game, but I'd guess he won't come down much.

I think that is probably worth the asking price. How much would a new, handmade 853 frame cost? Plenty.

I agree... a new custom 853 frame would cost you more than that.. and Dean has always been known for top quality stuff... you could certainly offer 7-800 and be happy if he agrees to it.. but I think 900-1000 is already fair.

$700, that's all it's worth... Maybe $750. If it fits you perfectly and you LOVE the way it looks and feels, then there really is no price ceiling, is there?
