Guide To Road Cycling

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Guide To Road Cycling

Hi all,

I was wondering if we could start a basic guide to road cycling unless it doesn't already exist and I haven't found it. I was hoping it would include info on the points system, the Cat system and anything else that's key for new riders.

Thanks

If you're expecting it to be a collaborative effort, you might as well forget about it. In this forum, we can't even get people to agree that water is wet.

You seem to be making the assumption that "road racing" and "road cycling" are the same thing. They are not. Over half the regular visitors to this sub-forum are happily non-racers. And over half of the other half only think they are racers . . . but that's another story.

That said, you probably still can get your questions answered here . . . by that other half.

Please enjoy your visit and come again.

search function.

points and CAT is for road racing, unless you're trying to achieve BF points to acquire the BF cat.
Otherwise, I think a basic starter is:
guide to road bike fitting
what bike for $XXX?
how to fix flats
OCP and schwag
Water or gatorade?
how to get started in road racing

I don't fully understand any of it. Maybe I should look at the road racing forum. I'm very, very new to the sport.

i'd be more interested in a guide to the Road Cycling sub-forum.

i'll start with a few commonly-used acronyms & terms thrown around on here:

OTB = out the back, as in "i got shelled otb of the peloton"
FTW = for the win, as in "i sprinted ftw"
HTFU = harden the f*ck up, as in "so what if it's snowing outside, just HTFU!"
Fred = if you have to ask, you're probaby one
Squid = bikers wearing spandex (actually you don't see this one much, probably a fixed gear thing)
OCP = ? what the f*ck does that mean anyway??
SSFG = single speed/fixed gear
BD = Bikes Direct (ugh)
LSD = long stead distance (not to be confused with the drug)
LD = long distance
CF = carbon fiber
OP = original poster (e.g. person who started the post)

surely i'm missing some. anyone?

OCP = Obsessive Compulsive Poseur. People who need those matching socks for their kit or valve caps to match their bar tape, where other people would just use whatever is available.

Ya know, my valve caps actually do match my bar tape. I wonder if Hip can top that?

Ya know, it's actually one of the best descriptions I've seen. Most people don't really get it . . . but that's another story.

That's a pretty bold assumption you're making there.

The 1st thing you do with valve caps is toss them.
Other tips include:
Don't be a squirrel.
Communicate and be predictable in group rides.
