Mavic Carbone water in rim question

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic Carbone water in rim question

I was riding this morning and it began to pour. After arriving home, I can hear water inside the dish of my wheel set. Any idea on how to drain the water out?

Can you not take the wheel off the bike and lay the wheel sideways and drain the water out of the drain holes?

Same thing happened to me with my reynolds dv's.

The rear wheel was easy, bike on stand, took tire off, rim tape off, and spun up the wheel in 53x11, spun all the water out. Front wheel, same thing, just didn't get as much of it out but it slowly evaporated in about a day on my floor vent.

Yeah, there have been a couple threads about this. Not much you can do but take the tire off and get it all out. The culprit is the threading where the nipple goes into the rim (when I used compressed air to help blow out the water, this is where i saw bubbles). It's not limited to Mavic's either, just something you have to deal with.

and make sure the wheels are sitting with the drain hole at the bottom. I ride in the rain fairly often and I just throw a small towel by each wheel and they will drain over night.

Cosmic Carbone Cannisters

Cosmic Carbones I had were awful in the rain, took in a huge amount of water, which entered through holes for spokes in (non-structural) carbon fairing. Pretty ridiculous design, only solution a bit of silicone.

So you sold the Zipps and now have a Mavic Carbone. Wanted to get that 303 but wifey intercepted my efforts. No ride report on the Carbones?

Heres your ride report.

Rode bike in rain. Wheels now double as water reservoir.

On my 2004 Cosmic Carbones there are two small holes in the carbon fairing for water to escape.

I have ridden mine in some pretty hard down pours and only a small amount of water gets in.
maybe you have to ride faster

Just got back in from there maiden voyage.................The Carbones were awesome. While not as "quick" as the 303's, I am not crossing my fingers and saying a prayer every time the road turns rough....which they do here often. It is a fairly windy day here but never did they feel awkward even with a full sidewind. Once rolling these wheels are fast..very fast. At every traffic light I would sprint up to 24-25mph then just hold the speed with relative ease. The 303's did not hold speed nearly this well but where definatly quicker in getting to the speed. Climbing is just different. It requires a bit more muscle to go up with the Carbones but not enough to be a huge difference to me. The 303's were more like a Ballerina, lite and lithe while the Carbones remind me more of a heavy weight boxer....Just aim them and gas it.

I was riding last week with some pretty good gusts, +25mph and came through an intersection just as a gust hit me perpendicular, I felt the wheels actually start to sweep out from under me, that was exciting. I do find on really windy days I have to lean into it a bit more but other than one occasion I have never felt like I was going to be blown over. Glad your enjoying your wheels, time to post a pic.

I recommend that you remove the tires, tubes, and rim strips (or tape).
My rear Cosmic Carbone eventually failed after riding in rain a few times. One of the eyelets was corroded and broke. This is fatal to a Carbone, MAVIC will not repair a Carbone with a broken eyelet. Mine was out of warranty and they sold me a replacement wheel at half price. Unfortunately the replacement was the SSC version with 20 black spokes and ugly compared to the original with 16 silver stainless spokes. I'm sorry that I bought the replacement wheel, should have put the money on a disk.

Hate to reply to my own post but this only works for carbon clinchers, obviously.

Very nice, I was oh so close to a Specialized when I bought my Scott. Just got a better deal on the Scott.

Al1943- I have the MP3 warranty so they replace the wheels regardless of how they die for 2 years.
