Pantani -- who was he?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I took a call at work from the Italian embassy in DC. I quizzed her about Marco to calm her down, she was hyperventilating. I think it was her first day on the job. She sounded very young. She knew about Marco. She got everything she asked for.

We were supposed to give away the store in those circumstances. It was fun and no natives of Italy were harmed in the exchange.

I come to bury Marco, not to praise him! So he had large ears and a rep of being a "little sh**T starter" according to Lance. I took a call years after the death of Pantani from an Italian embassy worker that wasn't having a good day early in the morning and made the most of it for me and her. I even gave condolences to Italy for the recent passing of Luciano Pavarotti.

So, LTFU!

Anyone who can climb like he did (and in the drops) doesn't need to HTFU.

That's because he didn't get his fitting advice from riders who set their bikes up from pictures.

Dope or not, he did something I doubt we will ever see again:

He won two Grand Tours back to back in the same year. Even on dope, riders were incapable of doing that.

BTW...I have Rendell's book. It's excellent, if you like detail. It's not an easy read like John Wilcockson's book through Velonews Press. That's more of a synopsis. Rendell's book is more like a textbook.

Being dead has its advantages.
