No quotes in this thread, but you knew that.

I meant in any thread ever. I don't recall anyone here ever saying "people who don't wear helmets suffer instant death or severe brain damage when they wreck"

No, I don't think anyone on here has said "people who don't wear helmets suffer instant death or severe brain damage when they wreck". That's hyperbole on my part. But the sentiment is there in every helmet thread that riding without a helmet will eventually get you killed or will at least result in a head injury. The same collective wisdom that tells the SSFGers that CF will spontaneously explode and the recumbent forum that they don't look like brightly colored sea otters, except much less adorable.

EDIT: And please, for the love of god, don't take me seriously. I already know I'm not funny. I'm reminded of that almost every day. But I also wasn't trying to explore a well-reasoned avenue of the benefits or risks of helmetless riding.

That Flickr link provides categorical evidence that the injuries shown were both incurred while in the act of riding a bicycle and wholly avoidable by wearing a helmet. Thank you for not jumping to conclusions.

Correct.

And here I was thinking that he shaved the top to make first-aid easier. And for aerodynamics, of course. I think he missed a few spots around the sides, though.

Holy crap am I ever sick of Darwin's name coming up in helmet discussions. I think that biologists need to lobby to make it illegal for people to talk about Darwin or "Darwinism," when: a) It is completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand, b) They clearly don't know a frickin' thing about Darwin or natural selection, c) It would be irritating and tasteless, or d) all of the above (as is generally the case in helmet discussions). This one is particularly bad. For crying out loud, the guy has head road rash. I don't think that's going to prevent him from reproducing .

Reynolds 04-29-08 08:05 PM

No Darwin, then.
What about Hitler?

Actually the resemblance to the guy in the photo and the guy who's name you don't want us to say is uncanny.....

That makes even less sense. If you're trying to make a connection, I'll remind you that the ideas of antisemitism, genocide, and the fact that humans can influence the development of species long predate Darwin, who was the first to recognize that the environment itself influences the development and evolution of species. In no way are Darwin's ideas relevant to the thinking and political conditions that led to the Holocaust.

Of course, now that you've Godwinized a thread about helmets, there's simply no way to avoid the dramatic implosion of this thread into a quantum singularity of stupid, the event horizon of which will stretch to the very bounds of all BF.net and beyond .

Incorrect. Darwin clearly has more hair.

Don't take it seriously, it was just an allusion to Godwin's law - maybe it could include Darwin?
