Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm not sure if this is entirely correct, but the wristband/cycling aspect of HTFU started when Stuart O'Grady (in the above photo) made a bunch of them for his CSC teammates.

i don't believe the pic above is O Grady, but rather one of his CSC teamates. (Schleck I'm thinking.)

I actually think it comes from some Australian wrestler or actor...

Wait a couple hours until the Australian contingent wakes up, they will know the exact origins of the saying...

O'Grady put it in bike nomenclature...

Edit...Look below...There you go...

It comes from an Australian comedian called Heath Franklin:

Doing a parody of this not very funny ex-con, Chopper Read:

O'Grady (Australian) bought some for his CSC team mate for the 2007 Tour de France.

You can see the "HTFU Australia" sketch here

and the real Chopper doing a TV spot here

"Your not f'n bleepin me!"

this is true. I have no sound here at work, so i watched it silent.

But my dad still hardly speaks english that well, but in Australia he learn't to call everything a f-n c-t.

my bike is a "f-n c-t of a bike" when it's broken for example.

Every second word is f-n, even in the mother tounge, he slipps the f and c word in there and mixes it up.

HTFU is a good mantra. I wish I could say it to my young daughters when they whine and complain about eating their vegetables or cleaning their room, etc....but I have to say it under my breath since they are only 6 and 8.

What I hate about HTFU is that I end up getting in modes where I use it at work...

Production Foreman: "I'm not doing that - Shouldn't planning be doing that??"
Me:"HTFU"

+150 ......... I'm tempted to say it to my wife as well my kids, but I doubt it would be taken as constructive criticism. Maybe I'll just tell them they are whining crybabies ... will that work ?
