Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Have you ever been harassed while biking?

I am working on a piece on the harassment of bicyclists. If you answered yes to the poll question, would you mind taking a further, short, survey on the harassment incident? If so, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?s...iD920aBw_3d_3d and provide me with some extra data.

Thank you to all of those that participate in this survey. If this piece gets published, I'll give a shout out here, and to BF in the piece.

Sincerely,
Brian L. Baker

if you have been riding for more than a week, and on anything other than MUPs, you have been harrased.. prepare to see a 100% poll result.

As I see it, MUPs are connections between sections of roads to ride on.
Some roads are absolutely horrible to ride on though... 80km/h limit, 4 lane wide with 18 wheelers being the main traffic that passes through.

as i leave the door my cat laughs at me.

I don't think your results will be significant since you are collecting data from cyclists who constantly whine and b*tch about every possible thing

Perhaps he is seeking more qualitative data or simply anecdotes. I do, however, admire your positive attitude.

Survey taken, best of luck.

"Confounded" you say? Interesting. This isn't my normal line of work, doing surveys and wondering about the variables. I'm a law librarian.

Bear with me.

I have had a huge number of incidents over the years. The number of incidents has dropped off dramatically from the 1970's/80's to now. It used to be that virtually every ride I would have at least one person yell at me to get off the road or worse. Now it is only a couple of times per year.

No worries. If your study was on how often road cyclists are harassed then yes the question is correct, but how far can that be generalized? It's not every day we get harassed (well, for some of us it is) but you may want to go into more detail on how often.

However, if you're looking for how often cyclists in general are harassed you should bring the poll to the commuting forum and the mtn bike, etc.

Just my thoughts, let us know how it turns out

My thoughts on this. Like a robot I say to myself for every car that passes me in both direction, "thank you" and for more than 3 years now no harrasment.

The most important thing when people do stupid things, I do not erupt in anger or feel angry later. I know this cannot be in your study but just being positive and appreciative has made me safe and enjoy cycling.

Thanks, I will. I'll also look at posting it over in the other forums. This is just the one I hang out in when I'm here.

Up to 10 survey responses so far.

Ear plugs have made the biggest difference for me. I wear street legal, motorcycle ear plugs.

The loud honks, the screaming kids in pick ups, the curses at left turn stop signs all fade into a blurry sound blanket. The folks get their road rage off their chest, and I don't care.

that's what I thought...
I figured either A: must live in the bike mecca of the world, or B: hasn't ridden long enough.

I was sprayed with a seltzer bottle one Friday night when I was 15. I pulled in to a school parking lot, the car pulled into the far entrance and stopped, facing me. I pulled out my Uncle Henry "Golden Spike." He turned and drove off.
Nowadays, I rarely get hassled, probably due to my nice manners on the road. Maybe, from my natural expression, cars know that I now have more than a Golden Spike. Much, much more.

Ear plugs don't help much against thrown objects.

Happened to me at least three times, with no provocation other then me being in their area.

yes, but mainly almost 10 yrs ago when i was a commuter w/ a mountain bike, jeans etc... i had multiple objects thrown at me and some yells thrown in. i also used to ride near dusk and later sometimes then.

but now, since i mainly just road bike it, and i'm 6-2 and in shape and riding like i belong there whenever, i rarely get anything besides a beep.

Good point. I rarely have any problems with anyone on my 6am commute. My 3pm commute home is another story.

Nothing like a carbon fiber shoe into an aluminum door panel. Sometimes I hope people just give me a reason to do so...but then my conscious takes over. I just forget about the incident and ride away.
