Hit a Dog
I hit a dog today about 1 ½ mile from home. This dog has been giving me problems now every since I have been riding, about 4 years. Today he finally got me. I was going 19- 20 or so and he came out of no where and I got him right in the side, sent me flying. I only ended up with a little road rash ( I'm getting good at crashing :D) and only some minor damage to my bike. Scuffed the side of my Sidi just a little and took out my Bell Sweep. I ended up calling the police and he talked to them and wrote a police report but it doesn't look like there's much that can be done.

I assume the police talked to the owners? If that's so, then there is something that can be done. Or you can just call animal control...or file a police report for being attacked by their dog. |
Sorry, just trying to cheer you up. Heal quickly

I had nearly the same thing happen last Tuesday. Came over a small rise, at about that same speed, didn't see the dog run out into the road and right into my front wheel until it was too late. I had just about enough time to think "oh S^%t" and then I was down on the ground.
I got pretty lucky as my worst injury is a sprained finger/hand, a little road rash and a bruised hip and knee. Nothing broken, nothing kept me off the bike, which was unharmed apparently because it landed on me. I went out and rode 30 more miles instead of heading home. The owner was out mowing his lawn in the back yard and once I flagged him down and told him what happened he was really apologetic and nice about it. Only problem was I didn't see my torn shorts or vest until afterwards (on the back), but he had given me his name, number, address so I sent him a 'bill' for replacements. Will see if he is cool enough to pay for the damages. Cdy291: I don't know what the laws are in GA, but if that dog has been giving you problems, you really need to get the authorities involved and force the owner to do something about it. A little lawsuit (or threat thereof) goes a long way here in Ohio. |
That is one mean dog. I couldn't get close enough to him to tell if he was hurt or just shaken up but, anyway. The police man was still talking to the owners when my mother got there to get me so I don't don't know what all was being discussed but it was a lot. From what I understand now that guy that lives there is the town wacko and has been known to shoot at people before. My father already didn't like the guy and my grandmother said that he is known around as "Dude Turner".

What kind of wheels were you using? You may want to consider letting some teams know.

Doesn't matter if attacked or not. The dog caused the accident, the owners are liable.
My neighbors have a little (probably 10 lb) dog that they let out without a leash all the time. It's a cute dog that just doesn't like the funny looking, bright colored animal that I am. Still, the neighbor was apologetic and now takes some measures to keep the dog from being a speed bump, and I would not hesitate to ask for reparations if I got hurt. |
Carry mace, or a pellet gun. Now the dogs run away from you.
|
Am i the only one that picked up on "The town wacko who has been known to shoot at people".... I don't think the dog is your problem...
Is this common in the US? lol |

As the OP found out the hard way, the real danger from dogs is not getting bit, it's the dog causing you to crash. Getting bit sucks, but a crash from hitting a dog can be much worse. |

A dog left private property, entered the public right of way and caused an accident. The owners are at fault and therefore completely liable. The end...

The guy says he had trouble with the dog 4 years, "and it just came out of nowhere?" I'm sorry he crashed, but the description could have been better. |
