Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

trek pilot 2.1 or trek 2.1

I have placed the trek 2.1 on lay away but now i am have second thoughts should i get the pilot 2.1. i will be riding about 60 miles a day for comutting during the week and around 30 on the week ends with some hills on the week ends. i do not care so much about the materials because i currently ride a univega gran premio for the same pourposes. the price difference is about 400 dollars. does any body have a recomendation besides trek for around the same amount of money. i am 5'8 145 with really long legs and a short torso.

Test ride both. The Pilot is more upright; it has a taller headtube and will allow for a more relaxed position. It will feel less 'racey' but may be more comfortable. Depends on the rider. So go ride it and see.

+1. Test ride both at least 3 times. Tough call.

I got a pilot 2.1, looks like the biggest difference is one is a double, and one is a triple. Preference may depend on how hilly your area is. But as others have said, test ride both and make your decision from there.

It really comes down to your prefernce. I have a Trek 1200, and I just picked up a few weeks ago a '08 Trek Pilot 5.0

For me the Pilot 5.0 wins hands down. The more relaxed riding position is just a joy to ride. I was in a auto accident years back, and at 34 years old, I already get a painful back and neck from being hunched over on the 1200. The Pilot 5.0 has brought back the joy of riding for me.

Test ride both and make your decision. Hopefully you can find a bike shop that allows longer test rides. A short ride, you won't notice the diffrence much, on a longer ride is when the advantages of the Pilot line come out.

HOLY SMOKES! You ride 60 miles a day for commuting during the week. 30 to work and 30 back? 1 hour rides.

30 miles on the weekends 91 hour rides) which means...........YOU RIDE AT 30 MPH! Keep your present bike!

well i am 26 and i have done competitive running and no 1 hour ride can be more hamering than 1 hour run. i work at a radio shack and right behind it there is the shop where i am going to get it. i will just have my set upgraded to shimano 105 and they offered me the 2.1 for 1000 dollars plus tax which is really good around this area (evereything is more expensive in southern cal.). by the way me and a co-worker are going to do our first race on june 21 at la mirada gran prix. once again thanks to all of you.

I'd suggest you ride for over an hour, especially if you want to race.

Back in '06 I bought my Trek 2100 ZR and was really torn on getting a Pilot. After riding recreationaly for 2 years I am really happy with the regular ride position of the 2100. You can still reverse the bar stem and play with spacers for a little upright positioning. I am 45 and 160 lbs. so I don't think you would be sorry getting the 1.2 but do as others suggest and ride them both. I will say that when the wind gets above 15mph I am glad I can get down and more horizontal to fight the resistance.

The pilot 2.1 is specced more similarly to the 2.3, not the 2.1 (105/Ultegra instead of Tiagra/105). The Pilot 2.1 is much more bike than the regular 2.1

If you were comparing the pilot 2.1 to the 2.3, I'd say if you want the raciness, go for the 2.3. Otherwise, the Pilot will make more sense. It's got clearance for fenders, a slightly higher riding position (15mm taller headtube I think?) and a triple.

The one major upgrade from the pilot 2.1 to the 2.3 would be the Bontrager Race wheelset instead of the SSRs... Not worth the ~$150 price differential in my book.

Get a gunnar steel bike and be done with it. Bontrager wheels are OEM garbage.
