Price check: '06 OCR 1?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Price check: '06 OCR 1?

I'm going nuts trying to find 'just the right bike'. I've already bought a REI touring bike thinking that had to be the right way to go... its not, I don't think i'm going to really get into touring/picking up groceries. I've still got a car and in the end I"m still going to be using it.

That being said road bikes are awesome and I think thats really what I had in mind.
The shop I checked out has the '06 OCR1
https://archive.giant-bicycles.com/us...06&model=11330

It was stickered at $1099 and the guy said they would drop the price to $950 since it is the '06 model.

My question is if that price is fair or if I should push for a deeper discount.

Thanks!

Wow, I can't believe they still have a new 2006 in stock.

A month ago I paid $899 for a brand new 2007 OCR1.

My friend just paid $800 for a 2005 OCR1. Last one left in the bunch. It was a small frame in a predominantly Touring/Mountain bike store which probably explains why it was still there.
Based on the postings so far:

2005: $800
2006: $950
2007: $899

I think you may have more negotating room there. Ignore sticker, no one pays sticker. You really need to compare what you're actually paying to other models, not the difference between MSRP and sale price. That'll just confuse you.

so do you guys think it would be reasonable to go back and ask for $850 for that bike?

Also, this sounds really dumb but the way that the wheels look scream "steal me". I plan on riding this bike to work a few times and to friends apartments. At work at least I would need to park it outside and lock it to a rack. The rack is in a well traveled area with many other bikes and I would feel pretty safe leaving it there. But those wheels scream $1000's bike. The shop is willing to swap them out for a comparable set of wheels (with the same tires) that have more spokes. It would be me trusting them that those other wheels are comparable though.

You can bet that they don't want to be using space in the shop for a 2006 model. The LBS where I bought my bike had the 2008 priced at $1099, so your LBS is way high on the asking price for a 2006. I was ready to buy that one until one of the other salesmen told me they had a 2007 they would sell me for $200 cheaper. I jumped at it. If I were in your shoes, I would tell them $800 and that's it and be prepared to walk out the door if they say no. They will probably chase you out into the parking lot and then sell it to you for $800.

I haven't been back to that shop yet but I visited another shop at the recommendation of a friend and was instantly blown away by the staff! Friendly, knowledgeable, and not BSing me.
The man there tried to sell me a '07 lemand tourmalet with full 105 groupset. Its very tempting and he is willing to let it go for $1000 even if I pay with anything other than credit card.

however, I found the same bike here for $825

I'd love to buy that bike from him but seeing that low of a price online makes me think twice about the price he is offering me.

Fewer spokes = less wind resistance.

You seem to be fairly new at this as am I. As a newbie, I would not consider buying a bike online. First of all, you will not be able to make sure the fit is right. Second, you will need to know how to assemble and properly tune it - or pay someone to do it which will eat into your savings. Third, if there is a problem with the bike it will be a major PITA to correct. Fourth, most LBSs offer free tuning for a year or two. A new bike will need to be tuned after the first fifteen hours or so due to cable stretch, etc. Thereafter, it will continue to need periodic tweaking. (I have already had mine in twice for tuning since I bought it in March.) If you buy online and can't do it yourself, it will cost you money. In addition, the LBS will stand behind the product. My bottom bracket started making noise after I had ridden for a few hours. I took it into the LBS where I bought it and they fixed it right away. My front wheel has been rattling since I got the bike. The LBS ordered a new wheel and will be installing it today no charge. Finally, there is something to be said for supporting the LBS even if they're slightly more expensive. They need to make a profit to stay in business and if they go out of business it can be a real PITA to get stuff done. My $0.02.
