How accurate is the edge 305 HR at counting calories?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think that's pretty accurate.
Funny, that's what my Polar tells me. And my computer. They are both accurate. Now I'm sad.

I use the heart rate, and the cadence feature. I think 30-40% too high is problably accurate. You would think after all the info, age, weight, bike weight, heart rate, cadence, speed, grade..... that the 305 has access to, that the calorie count would be alot more accurate. I figure I burn between 600-800 calories an hour.

Another important consideration is the source of the calories. If you're trying to lose weight, improve your endurance or ride for longer, you should try to source most of your calories from fat. These monitors are crummy at measuring this, but it's why everyone needs to test their threshold... everyone.

Well, I'm not sure on it using HR based on my using it on the trainer in GPS off mode. No calories calculated on those work outs. I could be wrong??

To get a reasonable calorie count you really need to measure work and both speed and HR are pretty weak ways to do. Speed does not take into account resistance very well and HR varies so much person to person that it is not very good indicator either. If you use the 305 and Sporttracks there is currently a power plugin which uses weather station wind measurements, speed and other variables to approximate power. It is not too bad and probably gives the best calorie estimate you can get without getting a power meter.

Read this thread. A fellow here compares the Edge 305 with a Powertap and Ascent software calculations. His conclusions are informative.

+1 on the calorie estimate being off. There are too many variables in play: terrain, wind, temperature, efficiency and the like. Many of these items cannot be measured with a GPS, HR of Power meter.

The Garmin’s MotionBased forum has some good discussion on this topic. Many people enter their weight in kilograms to get what they feel is a more accurate estimate of calories. For example, I am 150lbs which is 68kg. I enter my weight as 68lbs on my FR305.

About as accurate as the Democrats were at saying the Surge wouldn't work and we had already lost in Iraq.

In other words, not even close.
