Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yakima - Q Towers + HighRoller

Afternoon All,

I'm looking for someone who has some experience with the Yakima Q-Towers and can discuss how reliable they are.

I'm looking to purchase these for my Infiniti I30T (2000) (Yakima's site says the Q Towers is what I need):
https://www.amazon.com/Yakima-Q-Tower...0274620&sr=8-1
and use the High Roller to hold my bike:
https://www.amazon.com/Yakima-HighRol...0274824&sr=1-1

Does this look appropriate, do I need anything else?
Also, anyone have horror stories(or good stories to tell) about Yakima, if so, what are some comparable Roof systems for a road bike?

Thanks all!
Joe

You're also going to need a set of load bars (about $45.00 for set of two)
And a set of Q Clips made specifically for your car (about $60.00 for 2 sets of two clips - 2 for front and 2 for back)

By the way, I just purchased two Yakima Lockjaw racks from Dick's Sporting Goods and was suprised to find out that they were on 50% clearance. $45.00 each, brand new!

I would recommend getting a fork mount. I have a Thule Peloton which works great with my road and mountain bike. The non-fork mounts are unstable at high speeds (60 mph +). Whether you get a Thule or Yakima, they are both quality racks. Make sure you get a lock too.

I have no complaints about the Yakima system. Seems like top drawer stuff, well engineered and functions well. Good stuff.

I strongly encourage you to go with the fork mount - for the price of the mount you linked to above you can get a Sprocket Rocket which is 'da bomb. And pretty much bomb-proof.

As mentioned above, you will need the Clips and crossbars.

I mostly agree. I just tend to wonder why they insist on selling the locks seperately. Why not just include locks with the system? Seems like a no brainer to me.

The locks don't come because they are offered in sets of 2, 4, 8 etc. You will need 4 for the Qtowers, and one for the steelhead or lock jaw or what ever fork mount you use and then one extra for a cable that you may use for looping through the front wheel while it is in the wheel holder. You may also what to spend $50 on a fairing to quite the hum of air across the front cross bar.

The horror story is that they sell all of the pieces ala carte and, by the time you add it all up, the total system is usually north of $500.

One other thing. Any time that you load the bikes onto the roof of your car, put your garage door opener in the glove compartment or some other unusual place.

Here is everything I bought, and the fact it was under $400 seems like a pretty solid deal:
Description Total
Yakima SprocketRocket Bike Mount $126.99
Yakima SKS Lock Cores - Package of 6 6-PACK $47.99
Yakima Q Towers - Set of 4 SET OF 4 $$115.99
Yakima 48 Inch Round Bars - Pair PAIR $47.99
Yakima Q Clips - Pair 106Q $47.98
Subtotal $386.94
Shipping $11.99
Total Charged $398.93

I bought a full Yakima bike roof rack setup for my bikes last year from REI. Needless to say, I had a huge dividend.
