Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle sores

I have a Alias, that I think is very comfortable, but after 30 or 35 miles I develop saddle sores. I tried moving the saddle forward about 5mm and that didn't work. I just got done moving it forward again, 5mm more. I don't think I have to move it down, because I was having knee problems and now I'm not.Oh, I'm wearing PI shorts.

That saddle is very well padded which can lead to short term comfort and chafing over the long haul.

Thats really tough to diagnose....

Did you start with a level saddle? like put the bike on a level surface(check it) then put a book on the saddle and put the level on the book. This is the only starting point for me...

Have you tried Chamois cream? Its not that scary and it does work

Have you tried a different pair of shorts? I have pretty good bike pants right now, but the chamois in my skinsuit lights me up every time. it could just be that PI's dont work for you

I find it funny that you say the saddle is "very Comfortable" but that it bothers you after a fairly short ride. I am not familiar with the specific saddle, is it to soft? that in my experience can cause a saddle to be comfy and then feel like a hatchet after only a reasonable number of miles...

Yes the saddle is level, but that Chamois cream sounds like it's worth a try. I was just putting the saddle back where I had it and I really didn't think it was to soft, but I can push it in about 1/2 inch. Thanks for the replies guys.

I think it's because the saddle is soft and you sink in after longer rides. Try something harder. It'll hurt your sitbones while they get used to it but work well after that.

I had a similar experience using PI bibshorts...it wasn't the shorts, I thought the alias wasn't flexible enough for me and I found it painful...probably don't want to hear this given the expense... but try the toupe from specialized...less padding but way more flexible...made a big difference for me.

I have a Brooks that I can ride even when my butt is sore from riding other saddles. For example, Wed I rode 62 miles on another saddle. My butt was on fire for the last 10-15 miles of that ride. Today, my tush was still sore, so I swapped my good old Brooks over to the bike I was riding today, and rode 75 miles. No problem at all. Never even thought about the saddle.

I had an Alias for a while too. It was good for about 30 miles before it started to chafe.

Being able to sink your finger in half an inch sounds WAY too soft. You have discovered the hard way that a saddle that seems comfortable on the test ride may turn into a torture rack once you start doing real rides.

Alias is very firm saddle. It is anything but soft.

be careful with saddle sores. i was using one of the supposedly biomechanical saddles from SMP and got a sore. having spent a ridiculous amount of coin on it i was reluctant to let it go, thinking i just needed to break in a bit.
saddle sore turned into an infected boil requiring a trip to the doc, a course of scary strong antibio's, and about two weeks off the bike.
the SMP quickly went on ebay...

guh... toxic SMP...

sometimes it's the padding in the shorts.
sometimes adjusting the handlebar height will solve saddle sores.
I'd assume you have the correct width Alias since you can go 30miles on it before you start to get uncomfortable.
