***1st Annual FOTY Award (Fred Of The Year)***

Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

Ok, it's only May, but I think we have a winner already.....note the guy in the middle of the pic with the full-face helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and chest protector. On a road bike.

*Edit* Those aren't knee warmers either - I know someone who was on the ride who has seen this dude, it's from a bike club out of Rhode Island.

Cyclists as a group (myself included) really spend a lot of time and energy judging others, don't they?

Dude rode more miles today than I did. More power to him.

Not to nit pick but that picture can't be from May...

I am in Vermont and it is a lot greener here than in that picture...

And if he is to be voted FOTY we need to be sure he is really and not photoshopped (is that a word)...

The person who gave me a heads-up to this pic was on the group ride with them today (who shall remain nameless for obvious reasons)....and the person was in fact wearing all the same gear as in that picture....

What is the accepted attire for throwing one's legs over a[ny] saddle again?

Here I sat today, hoping that the few hours of sleep that I got because my lovely wife forgot to turn off her alarm clock wouldn't add to the little problem of the rain, 20 mph winds and 50 degree weather so that I could possibly have snuck a ride in outside where the sun, through it all, was still trying to shine.

I hope you all had a[ny] ride today , motorcycle helmet or not ..

Why to protect his face, elbows, knees, and chest of course...

You don't dress like this when riding???

Unfortunately, I am worth more dead than alive so I just wear a jersey and bibs...

This is a great picture. It's like a sesame st. episode "How many Freds can you spot?"

I don't think having the Fred label is a bad thing, I just wouldn't want to win FOTY award.

I know the club that GuitarWizard is referring to, and I've done occasional rides with them over the years. I can assure you that that's not a photo-shopped picture; i.e., the guy in the armor gear really does exist. If I've asked him what the deal with the unorthodox setup is, I no longer remember the answer.

It's all in good, clean fun. Sorta.

I just can't imagine what pedaling in kneepads has got to be like. Or body armor in 90 degree temps. Or a full-face helmet.

Sure, nobody wants to crash....I've done some pavement surfing myself and it sucks....but ya gotta draw the line somewhere from being cautious to being ridiculous.

Maybe he has some enemies and it worried about being bum rushed on his ride?
