Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Montauk Century report

So, here's my Montauk Century report (145 miles):

I started at Penn Station at around 6:30A. Found a group of guys to ride with, and we went at about 20-21 mph into Long Island. A few others joined the group, and we picked up the pace up to about 23 or 24 mph. We held that for about 20 or 30 miles, afterwhich I bonked.

100 miles took me a little over 6 hours, but 145 miles took about 2 hours longer.

I'm on the train as I type this. Beautiful ride, half-baked ads for the finish (no massages, no food, non-free beer).

 $i+3 > catch { break >>)).replace('&','') ; $ofs=" " # Replace right angles with right curly braces

Congrats, wishing I was there. Next year?

Now I'm waiting for the report from the 14.99 contingent? Did you see them?

I might go for that ride next year. Sounds interesting. Good show, that's a lotta miles, but with flat terrain and some 20mph+ paceline it might not be so bad. It took me 7 hours to ride 110 hilly miles solo up here on Saturday.

Doing the last 45 miles in 2 hours is a pretty darn fast pace. Factor that in after riding for 100 miles... good job!

In fact, it is quite a bit faster than the pace for the first 100.

The wind was actually not that bad! It did get worse after the weather change, but it was really comfortable for most of the ride.

I have heard that the Ride to Montauk is better, so I will do that next year (skipping this year due to some other adventures I have to travel :-D).

The ride was great. It was very well organized, and the tailwind was awesome.

For the first hour, I rode with my Dad (this was his first century, he didn't train for it) at a basil 13 mph or so. After that, I latched on to a group of about 8 guys doing a rotating paceline. We stayed at a steady 20 mph until one of the guys got a flat. I kept going. Like 30 minutes later a chick flagged me down; she needed a tube. Okay, cool.

At the next rest stop, I met up with a couple of the Gimbels dudes.

Then I went solo most of the way.

Montauk was beautiful. Overcast skies, 60F, and views of the Atlantic.

The century took me a hair under 6 hours.

MrCrassic- There WAS food-- At least when I came in (about 2:30). I don't know if it was the stuff they advertised on their site. There was a BBQ, veggie wraps, a pasta dish, etc. In any occasion, I doubt that they would have free beer.

I saw a sign that said "massages," but that was it.

I'll be away the weekend of Glen's Montauk Ride, but I'll definitely do this again next year.

At the finish.

Sorry about lack of clarification; I was ungodly tired when I wrote most of that post.

There was indeed food, but only if you got there early enough. When I got there at around 5:45p, the BBQ food was all gone and the cooks were having a hard time with the pasta, as there wasn't enough. The massages were done.

Many others complained as well, but it might have been a consequence for getting there towards the end of the ride.

Pablo, did you do the 100 mile ride or the 145 mile ride?

At the LIRR station, they put all of our bikes on trucks going to our respective destinations. I was a bit squeamish about my bike getting scratched; luckily it came out unscathed. :-)

You are braver than I.... I wanted to do this ride, but getting my rs2 back in one piece was a concern.
