Tall Quill Stem - 90 mm out of head tube

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tall Quill Stem - 90 mm out of head tube

I'm trying to find a classy looking quill stem that will enable me to have 90 mm of quill above my head tube. I've been looking at the Nitto Technomic Deluxe. Is there any other quill that will allow for this? It's going on my 92' Giordana and I just made the mistake of putting a modern stem on it. It kind of makes me sick. It needs something sharp!

Thanks for any help.

Eric

The Nitto is the only practical one I know of, unless you have a cromoly stem custom made by a framebuilder (not counting Rivendell's lugged stem). You will easily get 90 mm out of the Nitto Tech Deluxe, but even a standard racing quill stem such as any of the old classics (3ttt, Cinelli, ITM, etc.) will stick out about 75-80 mm. I've used a Nitto before on my bike, but I just have a 3ttt Synthesis on it now. It looks so much better, and for me, 10-15 cm lower really is not making that much difference (in fact it gave me a better position once I got used to being a bit lower). Extra tall stems on a racing type road bike look kind of goofy, but that's just my opinion. But 90 mm of stem out of the head tube isn't too bad. I do keep the Nitto for the future though. I also have a Zoom aluminum welded stem with a positive rise that doesn't look too bad. I think those are still available here and there.

Try the Classic & Vintage forum.
You will get more answers there.

You may want to ask a mod to move your thread, if necessary.

I was initially looking at the 3ttt Synthesis and thought it wouldn't have enough play. I'll be able to get 80mm above the head tube? I think I could get away with that. I would love to have that stem on my bike.

I wasn't sure which forum to post this in. Is it ok if I post the same question there?

Thanks

Eric

Aesthetically, that's exactly what I'm looking for but how do I know that I'll get enough height? Again, I could get away with 80mm above the head tube.
