Anyone Else Have ADD?
So, I have been all gung-ho, riding a lot, lots of BF, can't get enough gear porn, cross-training, eating right, the works, then, one day, nada.
Can't get motivated, burned-out on gear surfing, eating high-fat food again, etc. One factor is my road bike being in the shop, so I'm stuck riding my hybrid on power rides. This is a familiar pattern, though, with adult ADD, that I get all crazy motivated and can't get enough riding and biking and guitar playing, then I just wake up one day and can't get interested in any of it. Anyone else struggle with this? Save the HTFU and wussy comments, I've run marathons and crossed the Cascades solo on bike in a single day. Let me know what you think. Thanks for reading. How many kids with ADD does it take to change a light bulb?
"Hey, let's go ride our bikes!" |

Just because I have ADD doesn't mean I...oh, look a chicken!

How much sugar is in your diet or high fat food when you fall off the cliff?
|
I can get distracted while riding... a flash of blonde hair turns into a stare at a cute girl which then turns into me looking back ahead and realizing there's a car 2 feet in front of me.

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was in 5th grade, this was way before ADD was even know to most people. Not like now were almost every kid in school claims they have it, when they are just lazy.
I understand were your coming from but its not really ADD. ADD effects most in shorter amounts of time then what I think you are talking about. Like sitting in a class for 3 hours someone could exp. ADD not being able to pay attention to the material but on a very normal basis. Most of the time ADD dose not have much to do with someone that stops doing an activity that they have been doing for awhile. You just have become less interested in it and its really has nothing to do with your ADD. Reason I say this is I have the same problem with doing things for long periods of time. For a long time I raced nitro RC cars but after a 3 months lost interest and decided to do something else. Running, Swimming, biking, and soccer have only been the things I have kept up with for long periods of time. Soccer being the longest playing since I was 10. So yeah you have just lost interest and u want to move onto something new. Its pretty normal. |
I have BSF (Bike Schwag Fever). Is that like ADD?
|
ADD or not, I think having to ride in Tampa would make me lose interest pretty quick.

I have ADD and biking is one of the things that helps keep me focused. If I go more than two days without a ride I get cranky and can't focus on things I should be doing. I do all my own maintainance and repairs so I am almost never without a bike to ride. Maybe getting some tools and one of Leonard Zinn's books and learning to do your own work would help. You wouldn't have to leave your bike in the shop as much and it would give you something new to focus on for awhile.
I am also lucky in that my wife will practically force me to go out and ride when I am not feeling motivated. Riding puts me in a better mood so I am easier to live with. |

Do you have ADD or ADHD....sounds like you have the HD as well. I have ADHD. Are you taking medication? How long have you had/been diagnosed with ADD
|
what thread is this again?
ooooohh, something shiny  |
I've had ADD all my life, but wasn't diagnosed with it until I was in my thirties. It's a struggle, so I feel your pain. I tend to obsess with one thing for a while, lose interest and jump into another without missing a beat.
I take Adderal, which helps tremdously. It sucks on rides though because of the cotton mouth that results. Biking is very helpful to me though because it's relaxing. I haven't lost interest in it yet, but I do find myself buying bike parts every chance I get....;) |
<<<< Also suffers from BSF...

Count your blessings.

WTF does ADD have to do with this?
I have ADD, and cycling is probably the one thing I do in which I can keep a consistent concentration... well, that and bikeforums. |
There is no such thing as ADD. When I was a kid nobody had ADD. Nobody had panic attacks. Women didn't suffer from PMS. Nobody ever died watching somebody else eat peanuts. Nobody ever suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and there was no such thing as Life Coaches. These are all modern inventions.
You're just not into biking right now. Take a couple of days off and you'll be fine. |

bikeys is da crack fo me
Buy another road bike, or find a random ride buddy who road bikes, tha should get you interested again. If not il hold your gear for you until you feel better. |
After I was diagnosed w/ ADD (for the third time!) I finally went on Adderall . That only lasted a few months. The drug worked great, but I also discovered that it adversely impacted my cycling (diminished aerobic capacity and a decreased ability to regulate body temperature in warm/hot weather, both documented side effects of these types of scripts)
So I made a choice, I quit the meds and decided to try to treat the ADD w/ intense exercise and...so far so good! :) |
