Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are all bikes under $1000 (new) made in China or Taiwan?

I am looking to buy my first road bike and it seems as though all entry level bikes are made out of country. Is this true?

Pretty much. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though.

Correct.

Taiwan especially manufacture fantastic bikes. Build quality and any other variable you care to mention is right up there with the U.S. and Italian stuff. All my Kinesis frames were made in Taiwan and, while they're not the most expensive frames around, I'd challenge anyone to show me a smoother weld or a more thorough finish.

That depends on which country you are talking about.

The cheapest bicycle frames made in the USA are probably from Cannondale. Trek's made in the USA bikes start at about $3000. As others have said, Taiwanese brands like Giant and Specialized do make some great quality bikes.

Really cheap bikes come from China. Higher end bikes tend to come from Taiwan. VERY few bikes are made in the USA and Europe: Look, higher end Cdales and Treks, and the boutique frames like Serotta, IF, etc. 90%+ of even $3K+ bikes are made in Asia today.

Aren't the low-end Cannondales still made in the USA? I thought only the high-end carbon Cannondales were made in Asia.

Not anymore. Cannondale's low-end MTBs are made in China. Cannondale realised they were priced out of the entry level MTB market, which Trek and Giant were doing quite well in, so to compete, they decided to outsource the entry-level frames.

Are they not assembled in America but really made in Asia? I don't know but that would be my guess.

What about Cannondale's low-end road bikes?

Cannondale does have a frame production factory in Pennsylvania. Components will come from Asia, of course.

How is the resale value on bikes from BD?

The prices are enticing, but it's hard to spend $1000 on something you aren't sure fits properly.

There are a couple of different cruiser-type bikes that have frames made in the US, for what that is worth.

The Cannondale Synapse Seven sells for around $999, doesn't it? That's just under $1000, and though its components (as with just about any bike) are made overseas, the aluminum frame is still hand made in the USA. There may be a road bike built around the CAAD9 frame for under $1000 too, but you may be getting Sora and other mixed components. The Synapse Sport Seven is probably not much over $1000 as well. Any of these will be built around US made frames. ...of course that matters most to those US workers building the frames. For the rest of us, it's probably

A good bit of oil is dug up from "terrorist" land, but no one seems to care .. but we will move heavens to not buy a bike made in Taiwan.

CAAD9 is not considered low-end, the Synapse 5/4 might be made in China, but I wouldn't bet my money on that.

New? As in "not ridden"? Or is this a true 30 day "trial period"? As in, "I rode it and was not duly impressed so I want my money back". I'd want to clarify that before I ordered one. It looks like a loophole to me.

Oh, and the $1000 Trek 1500SEs we had last year said "Made in America" on the frames. Seems they had a bunch of leftover 105 groups. So they fabbed up a bunch of frames in Waterloo and made bikes.

i got a great condition eddy merckx, hand crafted in belgium out of columbus SLX tubing, with complete 8spd dura ace, for $500, so... oh wait, you want a good deal on a new bike, made of tin cans, and outfitted with the same parts they put on those hybrid cruisers for people who ride on the boardwalk really slow..
