Kryptonite's Top 10 Bike Theft Cities
CANTON, MA (BRAIN)—Kryptonite has once again released its Top 10 Worst Cities for Bike Theft.
Without further ado for 2007:
1. Philadelphia, PA
2. Chicago, IL
3. New York City, NY
4. San Francisco, CA
5. Tucson, AZ (tie)
Portland, OR (tie)
7. Denver, CO
8. New Haven, CT
9. Cambridge, MA
10. Austin, TX
Kryptonite's marketing manager Donna Tocci said she was shocked by the data.
"When we did the compilation, there wasn’t even a city close to Philly," Tocci said. "Not even close."
Kryptonite compiles its list from its regional managers, hundreds of shop visits, input from colleges and universities, customer service interactions and data from police in various cities.

Wow, is it really that bad in the U.S.? I would have thought that Amsterdam and London would have been right up there, along with Paris. And aren't Manchester and Birmingham bad for bike theft? I thought I'd heard that the Scandinavian countries were fairly bad for bike theft, too; a higher percentage of ridership would mean more theft, wouldn't it?
Toronto and Vancouver certainly have their fair share of bike theft, and I'm very surprised they did not make this list. That's a bit of a dubious honour, having the top ten all being American cities! Yikes!

Well in the Drexel university newspaper there's a crime section.. every week there's at least 2 thefts reported to the paper... and this is just on campus.

what's interesting is that they have no numbers. approximated or exact.
Toronto is probably bike theft capital of Canada, but a lot of stolen property doesn't get reported.

There's no surprise that half the cities are college towns and the other half are big cities with lots of bicycle commuters. They do say that Philly is way above everyone else.

I also had one panicked moment where I thought it had been boosted, but that was just a case of forgetting that I'd moved it...

Austin is kind of the biking capital of Texas. I would question if bike thefts per bike were any higher than other places- but more bikes means more thefts.

Gotta love it. Bike thieves here can't even write their own names, but they sure as hell know the difference between a "cheap" Selle San Marco saddle and a $300 one. It's amazing, actually.

Ha! Before I opened the thread I said to myself, 'watch, philly will be #1"..
Great... I live in Philly, my folks live in New Haven, and my sister lives in Chicago... looks like I can't take my bike anywhere!

No Detroit! Yay! Maybe it has something to do with us being the #2 fattest city?
