Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In the time you took writing this question, someone snuck into your bathroom and wrote the answer in lipstick on your mirror. Go there now to see what a Fred is.

Just kidding, by the way. I am way more of a Fred than almost anyone else in this forum. Damn proud of it too.

But if you have to ask what a Fred is, then...well...you just might be one.

Fred was/is the guy I rode 100km with. He had a $3.5k CF Trek with full kit, I rode my $799 Hybrid in my Blundstone boots. He could not finish the ride, I had to leave him behind.

One sure indicator has to do with how many "things" you have attached to your bike (not counting cyclocomputers and powertaps). For instance, if you have a bag attached anywhere that is larger than two of your fists, well....

p.s.: just about everyone is one to one degree or another, so don't get all sensitive. We don't need another one of those threads.

Sorry. You have it backwards. You are the Fred. Mr. Trek is a Poseur.

But to be a Poseur, do you not have to act like you are fast only to be dropped in the first 1.5km? This guy made to indication that he was fast; just all bling and slow.

I know I looked odd not in bling gear, but did not care. I still finished the 100k with a decent time. So i guess I was the Fred. OMG Fred FTW!!

Indeed, "all show and no go," or "all bike and no legs," are the Poseur paradigms.

For instance, it would be rather Fred to expect to impress people with a 100k, where in real life you don't get the big boy pants until you do a hundred miles.

Lemme see...no replies other than his/her OP, from a member since 2005 who allegedly doesn't know how to search or what the term 'fred' means. Ya think, just maybe, it might be a troll?

What's your point? F the OP, we're getting mileage out of this thread. That's all that counts.

You want miles? You can't handle the miles!

I must be a Fred, and a Poseur! I have a nice Cinelli that has hung in my garage for 5 years. When I took her out this week to try and get back into it, I was gasping for air after 20 minutes!

Fred: A person who continually starts dumb new threads about the same or very similar subjects, such as, "What's a Fred anyway?"

So, if you look GOOD and you are fast, does that make you an elitist roadie that does not wave to other people?
