What Was Your First "Real" Road Bike?

After riding my brother's Schwinn Varsity, which I posted a thread about, I got a Peugot UO8. It was yellow, and I had a Peugot checkered-flag T-shirt that I wore all the time. I loved that bike.

My father asked if I'd like to try riding with him, so he bought me a used Fuji Ace. Black with gold decals and biopace chainrings.

Fiori Roma, it was red, zoom.

Trek 1500.
Unless you mean REAL road bike, in which case that would be my Opera Palladio.

mattm 05-29-08 03:42 PM

miyata 312 - i still ride it on long-distance rides

Bridgestone RB-1. I had it for about 100,000 miles. Bought new for $750, sold it after 15 years for $400 <sigh>

Gitane TDF, reynolds 531, fiamme red label rims, stronglight crank, huret jubilee derailleurs, mafac centerpulls, pale metal flake blue. Summer of 1974 and I think I spent every spare cent on replacement sewups. I grew so much over the next winter that it didn't fit me at all the next season.

A Panasonic Sport-LX. Some kind of Suntour crap, stem shifters. As an added bonus my first helmet was a Bell Spectrum with the vented lycra cover and the rainbow pattern on the side. :D

CALE262 05-29-08 04:11 PM

'89 Cannondale R600 crit w/Suntour Blaze... Upgraded to Shim 600 ultegra a year later...Before that, I had a Kuwahara ten-speed something or other which I didn't really consider a "real" roadbike...

dtrain 05-29-08 04:12 PM

A used Trek 1000

caloso 05-29-08 04:13 PM

Does a Schwinn World Sport count? It was lugged steel and had aluminum 700c rims. I think it was the bottom rung of Schwinn's "real" bikes.

the Scott Speedster S3 I have now. Still riding it, but only have been riding for a few years(05- present)

The one in my Sig.

mkauffman 05-29-08 04:45 PM

My current Tarmac, I wont count my Trek 520, even if that is what eventually got me into road.

El Diablo Rojo 05-29-08 04:45 PM

'89 Ciocc with Shimano 600 and Columbus SL Tubing, unless you consider a Centeriun Le Mans as a 'real' road bike then that would have been my first.

I bought a 2005 Cannondale R1000 (ultegra 10 w/ truvativ carbon crank and ksyrium elite )in late 2004. In the next year or so, pretty much everything got changed on it and was 2007 Record. I finally got rid of the frame last year and build myself a custom steel bike with all those parts.

Machka 05-29-08 06:38 PM

It was in the late '70s, I was maybe 11 years old ... and it was white. I don't remember the brand.

Ciocc77 05-29-08 06:54 PM

A Ciocc ( World 77 Frame ) with Campy Super Record, still ride it today. Bought it new in 1984 with money earned busing tables and lifeguarding in high school.

My first real road bike was a Lemond Buenos Aires in...hmmm...2002 probably.

dark13star 05-29-08 07:16 PM

A Puch in 1980. I don't remember the model, but it had Suntour components.

Old School 05-29-08 07:16 PM

1984 Univega "Viva Sport" -- just sold it last year. :(

I had a Trek 560 with this kick ass red to orange fade paint job. I thought it was titties compared to those silly aluminum bikes with those big fat tubes. I remember thinking, "Geez, that aluminum stuff is never gonna take off!!"
