Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry. Improper use of the word "itch" instead of the word "scratch" is one of my pet peeves. You scratch an itch, it's not a verb. Carry on.

Uhm... save it. You're preaching to someone who says LOL out loud as if it was one syllable. And to think I own the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style.

That probably relates directly to the size of your fingers... Why not just go to the nearest bike store/sporting goods store and try sticking your fingers through helmets till you find one thats appropriate?

I imagine that game would be more fun if it is done while unsuspecting shoppers are trying on the helmets, and steaktaco is humming the theme song from Jaws.

Wait a minute, I live near Philly, scratch that. (Hopefully twahl doesn't object to that use of the word "scratch".)

And on the serious side, check out the Bell Ghisallo helmet. Or consider a helmet liner / skull cap. Under Armour makes one in their "Heat Gear" series that looks like it would be very useful. I shave my head, and my scalp is getting plastered with bugs and gnats this time of year.

Mind if I borrow the manual? I need to edit a paper turabian style and endnote apparently didn't cite certain things the right way...

As for your scratching an itch issue. I just bought the bell alchera helmet when nashbar was having a sale. My index finger fits through almost all the vents in the helmet. I don't have small thin fingers either.

Give it a look, it might work for you!

I thought I was a finicky grammar person but I didn't know that. Jeepers.

I have both the Specialized Decibel and the S-Works helmets. I can poke a finger much easier through the S-Works helmet, probably the best helmet I've had for scratching. I don't have to compress the helmet very much on my head either (doing that while scratching can unleash a torrent of sweat into my eyes, compounding the whole "I gotta bad itch" problem into a slightly more unstable one).

I'd go to your local shop and check out the helmets. As a tip, skip the helmets that don't cost very much. Seriously. The vents will probably not be as big.

Carry a pencil or a pen with you. Then you can always track what part of your head itched and put it in a spreadsheet for tracking purposes.

otoh, perhaps there's a market for ocp riders.........a thru-helmet head scratcher. it could be attached to your chin strap. of course, there needs to be a variety of colors including titanium and carbon fiber.

I just use a head sweat, hat, or bandana to keep things out of my hair. But then again, we don't have loads of gnats or other flying insects flying about.

If my head itches I just grab the whole helmet by the top and move it around. Works for me.
