Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who talks/yells while riding?

I'm expecting the, "If you weren't talking so much, you could focus on performing better," but whatever.
I sometimes yell while training, and it helps me get angry, and hammer through it. A few weeks ago I didn't see these people in their front yard, and screamed, "Oh, f***cking come on!" while getting blasted by the wind on my way up a hill. Their faces = hahaha. I would never do it on a group ride, and don't when I know anyone is around, but is anyone else guilty of doing this (all too often)?

I don't yell, or talk. I ride alone, I love silence and solitude. I ride to find peace, to escape chaos.

I don't yell but I do talk to myself a lot ie. F-ing wimp; for Christ's sake, slow down, it's a long way home; F-ing rude *******, didn't even wave. There are times when riding in a small group where people yell things out and it usually scares the crap out of me because I'm in my "zone".

The Yell is an essential part of the Random NYC Night Ride for plowing purposes

no yell, no plow, squished dogs

If I'm alone, I might talk to myself a little - usually random thoughts; sometimes encouragement. In a group, I certainly chat with the other riders as we ride.

Also, I've been known to yell during hard efforts. It does have the effect of focusing the mind. Kind of washes out that little guy on your shoulder trying to tell you that you should just quit.

I talk to people riding with me. If its a recovery day, I whistle. It helps me take my mind away from going faster and keeps the heart rate low.

I do yell occassionally by myself. I had a dog chase me the other night and it surprised me and I yelled quite loudly. It provided a nice adrenalin surge for a couple of miles. The gusty headwind thing is normally worth a few choice words too.

When riding alone, I talk to myself, yell at myself, and sing along with my MP3s (or whatever is in my head at the time). I've gotten some looks on climbs because as I reach the top I sometimes scream "OH GOD, OH GOD!!!

When riding with others, I don't talk much and prefer nobody talk to me or yell at me. The former is pretty much respected, the latter, not so much.

I yell at dogs. Cypress, bless him, had great advice on the subject--as soon as Fido gets close, lean down and yell "NO!" as loud as you can. Fido scampers away.

I also make an involuntary gutteral growl when something scary happens, near-miss crashes in two crits most recently.

Other than singing Queen's "Bicycle Race" at the top of my lungs when passing a gas station, that's about it.

I make the mistake of saying things in traffic that I normally would when in a car, not realizing in time that since I'm outside, they can hear me. This morning I got behind an Audi, and the guy was kinda dragging his heels leaving a stop, so I'm there clipped in nudging forward ready for the big push, and he's still hanging back, so I said "Whenever you're ready, sweetheart". He shot me the stink-eye thru the sideview, lol.

I also whistle the turn signal noise on some turns.

I talk a lot on group rides- guess I'm "that guy" sometimes. I can usually find someone else sociable, especially when the pace isn't being pushed (or we're pushing it).

On solo rides, I will occasionally mumble at cars or at myself on hard efforts like big climbs. I've yelled once or twice.

I got yelled at on a group ride this week. By a guy with a helmet mirror. Go figure. As they say, "dropping well is the best revenge."

Only if you do something stupid that puts the rest of the group at risk.

Oh, and I yell at cars. I had a guy pulling a boat turn in front of me into a marina driveway that is also a driveway to a restaurant. I yelled as loud as I could as I went around him "F-ing Ahole". Then I noticed a bunch of people that were outside the restaurant all looking at me. And, because this was going down hill with a hill infront, I continued to cuss all the way up the hill as I had to come to almost a full stop to go around him.

If I'm riding with people, I chat if riding two abreast... if I'm alone. I'm probably singing to my music. There are 3 places I sing: the shower, on my bike, and in my car, and only when nobody can hear me. It IS that bad.

There are a few chatty cathys that I ride with. I welcome whatever conversation I can have.

I use talking to help slow down faster riders when the setting is friendly.

*coming up to big hill*

psimet: "So....what do you think about the upcoming election?"
Other Rider: "Well you see......"

psimet: "That seems to make you upset. Why?"
Other Rider:"I guess it goes back to....."

psimet: "Do you prefer science or religion?"
other rider: " I was just talking to my wife the other day and....."

psimet: "Campy or Shimano....well actually Shimano, but I'll tell you why....see back when Tullio - wait a minute...damnit....you tell me .....nevermind. Hey! Wait up!"
