Suggest me some wheels!
 

Ok, I have a trek 1500 with a set of bontrager select wheels (worth about $150.00 for the set). Everything I have heard is that if you do serious miles these wheels will not hold up. Still I am tryin to wear these out before I buy another set of wheels, but I would like to have an idea of what wheels i want to slap on this bike next.

I'd like to keep it under $400.00 for the wheels and was looking at those Open Pro's laced onto Dura Hubs that somone told me about a few months ago, i forget which website they're on but I always hear about how great they are for under $400.00. Are there any other wheels you guys would reccomend, I've been out on injury but I've logged about 1200 miles since January 1st so I'd like something like that holds up, oh and it needs to be 9 speed compatible.

No help here, but I had a set of selects and they were bloody strong. If you're not racing, just keep riding them.

I eventually wore them out through rim wear alone, be more diligent about brake pad replacement than I was.

I'm hoping for another sale from Nashbar for the Ksyrium Elites.

Is it worth paying more for the open pros laced to dura-ace over the open pros laced to ultegra hubs?

The selects actually look cool, i think they look cooler than the dura-ace/open pro's but they're always migrating out of true slighty and they flex like crazy. Also I ride over alot of rough roads esp in griffith park (los angeles) where i ride quite often.

i have over 2k on my used pair, just broke a spoke though, but that was after a lot of rail crossings and I do weigh 220lbs.

Well I'm not going to lie, if the Selects hold up, they hold up and I'll keep them; I'd much rather spend the money on a tour out of town or a second kit and helmet. Like I said though, if something happens to these i don't want to be hunting around trying to figure out what wheels to get being rushes so i can get back on the bike. I was also looking at the Ksyrium Equipes, and the Shimano ultegra wheelset what would you say a good price on those would be,

I'm 220lbs and has raced and done centuries on Bontrager Selects. No problems at all.

However, I notice a huge speed difference when I switch to Krysriums SLs. Of course there's a huge price difference between them.

go to performancebike.com and get the open pro/ultegra hubs 32 3X.

Check your local shops for ones that support a team/club and ask in the SoCal Regional forum for recommendations for shops that build wheels. You shouldn't have to use mail order in your area.

If you wouldn't mind buying used, also check Craigslist and watch eBay for "dura ace open pro."

Well the bike is worth about $1200.00 I paid about $830.00 for it, so I don't think putting a pair of SL's or Elites on it would make a whole lot of sense, maybe I'm wrong.

Easton Circiuits/EA70s are a good value wheel in the 300 to $400/pair range.

To make any wheel last longer, once a month or so pick the little silvers of aluminum and pieces of rock from your brake pads. Low end rims are bad about throwing off metal at the non-welded joint in the rims. If you hear a hissing sound when you apply the brakes, that is the sound of your rims being worn away by the junk in your brake pads. Use some high power reading glasses and a X-acto knife to dig out the stuff in the pads. I remove the pads from the brakes one at a time, it makes the surgery much easier, and avoids get the pads replaced in the wrong position.

+1... I rode those wheels for a while and I never had one issue with them other than going out of true once or twice (but I was riding cross with them, not road). They're heavy, but can take a beating just fine.

I am a big fan of the Bontrager Race X Lite wheelset. They are exceptionally lightweight, but more importantly can take a hell of a beating (at least in my experience– I've hit some pretty nasty pot holes).

I find mine go slightly out of true quite a bit, i've had them trued a bunch, but I get free tune ups for a year at my LBS, after that I'm going to have to deal with it. How are the shimano Ultegra wheels?

sell the junkers on ebay for 150 put your 400 with it, bam Ksyrium SL's rock the house.

The expensive bikes out there have the same frame as the cheap ones (or the cheap bikes' frames used to be the expensive bikes a few years prior), just with more expensive parts bolted onto 'em. Nothing wrong with getting nice wheels. :thumb:

Ultegra/105 hubs to Kinlin Niobium/IRD Cadence Aero 30mm deep with 2.0/1.8/2.0 DB spokes and brass nipples, 3x for rear, radial for front.

set me back about $70 per rim, $100 for the hubs and another $90 or so for spokes+nipples and $100 for labor.
