I went to Germany as an exchange student in 1998 and besides exploring the wonders of Amsterdam coffeeshops, I also came back a smoker. I was never much a 'hardcore' smoker, but I definitely averaged 1/3-1/2 pack of Camel Ultralights a day. I always wanted to quit, but surrounded by friends who all smoked more and without shame, it was hard. I quit in 2004 cold-turkey.
I gotta confess: a good friend of mine from back home moved up here to Chicago recently and he still smokes, albeit only maybe a 1/4 pack a day. If we're out and I'm feeling sauced, I'll take a couple long drags off of one of his cigarettes. I have no urge to go beyond that and I don't have much in terms of cravings when I'm not around him.
That said, whenever a smoker walks by me and I catch a whiff of some of their secondhand smoke, I start salivating. I guess the hooks are in me deep. I can't go into a smoky bar without getting nauseous, and the thought of actually becoming a smoker again disgusts me, so take that for what you will.

Nothing beats a fine briar filled with Dunhill Nitecap, leisurely smoked on a cool, late Autumn evening while watching the sun set through the maple trees....

Cigarettes are awesome. Nicotine is a great drug. It'll pick you up or calm you down depending upon what you need at the time. It helps you focus and cigarettes make great props for emphasizing conversational points. Heck, smoking can even help you maintain your weight! The first cigarette in the morning is a great feeling.
Of course, there's that whole problem of them killing you and making you stink. Fourteen years since my last cigarette and I still want one.

started at fifteen...damn peer pressure. still managed to run 15:53 in high school.
ive been on and off and right now im on. training is hard, but makes you appreciate hard work--and then there is the fantasizing "what if i did quit".
Lucky Strikes, ftw.

Rene Pijnen (former Olympic 100km TTT champion) used to smoke when he was racing the 6-days. The indoor tracks were full of smoke anyway....

I've got plenty of vices, but fortunately mistress nicotine just made my head spin, so I have not seen her for many a long year. It was only a casual relationship anyway.
Anyway, here in Australia a packet of cancer sticks will set you back at least 10 bucks. That makes a real hole in the beer budget.
I vaguely recall from some anti smoking campaign that if the nicotine from 2 cigarettes was injected straight into your bloodstream, it would kill you...I'm not saying this is gospel, but it is frightening.

No one has more of an addictive personality than me, I can't do anything without doing it to extremes.
Bikes, one isn't enough, I need seven.
Shoes ... don't get me started, bike shoes alone!
Beer? it's like I collect them!
the fact is, you do get smoking out of your system. and you forget how much you liked it.
I had to change some other habits too like talking on the phone, giving up coffee for a bit and finding another trigger when I got in the car.
Wait ... there's always SEX to replace CIGS! go figure

I used to smoke a pack a day. But the more I ride, the less I smoke. When I ride hard for hours, somehow I don't even think about smoking. I've been told that when doing a lot of exercise, the body releases some feel-good chemicals so you don't feel the need (as much) for nicotine... I have no idea if that's true. Probably is just because I'm having so much fun that I don't want to stop for a cig break.
I did tried once to smoke and ride at the same time. I got VERY dizzy within the first few puff and almost fell on my arse. It is NOT a good idea.

I've been smoking cigarettes for years. Started with left-handed? mid teens and was very proud of the fact that I was the only one amongst my friends who didnt smoke cigarettes. A year later I had a big exam coming up and switched to cigarettes so that I wouldnt miss the funny stuff and I've smoked ever since
I've been planning to stop ever my son was born 4.5 yrs ago but have never once tried to stop, my entire life, dont know why. I've recently started biking and running with the hope that that will help me to stop - my son has never seen me smoke and I dont ever want him to, apart from the impact it has on my own health...
