Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1981 Miyata 610 newbie Q's

Hello everyone,
I just recently moved to the Bay area in California, sold my car, and decided to get a road bike. I have years of mountain biking experience, but I'm totally new to road bikes.

Yesterday I bought a Miyata 610 from a used bike shop here in Berkeley. After doing some research, I discovered it is a 1981, thanks to a Miyata catalogue posted online. Its size is 62...I'm tall.

I was wondering if anyone had any useful information for me about this bike.
What should I know about it...(shifters, frame etc.)

All I can tell from the frame is that its a 610 (chr-mo?)

its in pretty good shape, but I just want to know all I can about it.

I would truly appreciate any advice and information you might have for me!

Alos, I noticed the freewheel makes quite a bit of noise. Is this normal?

Thank you in advance for any info.

I have a 1981 Miyata 710. I'm by no means an expert (a second to posting in C&V!) but it's a great ride. Did my first three centuries last summer on it. The freewheel is a bit noisy, I think it's normal.

What is the name of the shop? I head up there a few times a year and want to have a look around.

The shop is called Recycle Bicycle. its in Berkeley on Sacramento and 67th. Not a big shop, but they have awesome employees and great customer service.

Miyata bikes tend to be among the very best high production bikes out there and the 610 is a beautiful bike... I would guess it is a 12 speed with those beautiful Ukai double walled wheels (which are pretty much bombproof).
